Description	:	Irma stepped joyfully into the hereafter surrounded by her loving family in the house she and husband Bill built on a small farm affectionately named Bonny Slope. Read More	Irma stepped joyfully into the hereafter surrounded by her loving family in the house she and husband Bill built on a small farm affectionately named Bonny Slope. She was the youngest of five children born to John and Daisy Hershey. On March 8, 1921, in Parker, SD, she joined siblings Florence, Vail, Hazel and Raymond. Irma had wonderful memories of a happy childhood and flourished in spite of the hardships of the Depression. She met her future husband Bill while she attended high school in Mitchell, SD. Together they received their bachelors degrees at Dakota Wesleyan University. WWII led to the decision to have a double wedding ceremony with sister Hazel and Loren Wheeldon. When Bill went off to war in the Pacific, Irma signed up to serve as well and joined the WAC. After the war Irma and Bill furthered their musical studies at Juilliard in New York. When their first child David came along they decided to head West and made their way as far as Vancouver, WA. This became home for the remainder of their lives. Irma was an enthusiastic partner and participant in various musical pursuits that she and Bill embarked upon over the years. The most enduring was the formation of the Vancouver Choraleers in 1949 which later became Brahms Singers, then Vancouver USA Singers and continues on to this day as the Vancouver Master Chorale. While Irma kept busy raising five kids she also taught piano, co-founded a piano club and later taught choir, music and kindergarten in the Evergreen School District. Irma and Bill were both very active in church life at First Congregational UCC and took on many roles including choir, Sunday school, church day camp and stewardship. Irma took great pleasure in greeting everyone who entered the church each Sunday. She had an unmistakable laugh and a joy for life that was irrepressible. Even in her last hours she delighted in the raucous carols and songs and jingle bells that filled the house. We loved her deeply and will hold her forever in our hearts. Irma is survived by her five children, David (Judy), Julie (Mike), John (Kathryn), Becky (Dave), Beth (Don); and many beloved grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. Our family would like to express our deep gratitude to Irma's remarkable caregiver Cecilia Shepard whose unparalleled love and devotion allowed Irma to live out her final days at Bonny Slope. We plan to gather next summer for a celebration of Irma's remarkable life. Published by the The Columbian on Dec. 28, 2021.
