Death was due primarily to his advanced years, a diabetic condition and the effects of a stroke he suffered a few days ago. With the passing of Mr. Monroe, Lamoni has lost one of her most colorful and valued citizens. He was born October 15, 1855 in the territory now named Wyoming, of pioneer parents who had left England at the insistence of the mother, who desired to join those of like faith in America. The family was brought to America by James Monroe, a sea-faring man who made his last voyage in the company of his family on their way to America. Coming to Missouri, they remained there only a short time and then began the long trek towards Utah. Mr. Monroe was always willing to tell of his experiences in the west along with incidents of his early life, and through the telling his listeners were made conscious of the price the early pioneers had to pay for the few meager comforts they enjoyed. The Monroe family lived in Utah for several years and prospered financially. However when the oldest daughter, who was a beautiful girl, was in danger of being forced into a polygamous marriage, the family sacrificed their belongings and started another long journey towards California. Driving before them their small herd of cattle and carrying their few remaining possessions, the family endured the hardships and dangers of the desert. After the father died, the mother again felt the desire to be with people of like religious faith and the family once more crossed the continent. They arrived in Lamoni in 1883 where they became a valuable addition to the community. With the passing of Mr. Monroe the last of that early pioneer family is gone, the oldest sister having dies last June. Mr. Monroe had always expressed a desire that when his time came it would be a sudden passing and his friends and family were gratified to know the wish he had expressed so many times had been granted. His death came Sunday morning at 9:30 o'clock. He had also expressed the desire to live to reach his 80th birthday, which was granted. Mr. Monroe leaves to honor his memory, his wife and eight children, Zilpha Monroe of Springfield, Illinois; Mrs. Clarence J. Newman of Powell, Wyoming; Carl of California; Mrs. E. F. Fry of Peoria, Illinois; Mrs. M. E. Hindricks of Des Moines; Arthur of Kansas City, Mo.; Mrs. T.R. Mc George of Brooklyn, Iowa; and Don F. of Ridgeway, Missouri. Funeral services were held from the White Funeral Home, Tuesday afternoon. The favorite "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" which was requested by Mr. Monroe was part of the music at the service. J. A. Gunsalley, a life long friend officiated at the service, also requested of Mr. Monroe. His life so nobly lived should be a source of encouragement to his family and a challenge to all those who knew him in making use of the best of life's opportunities.
