Read More	“Uncle Lum” is dead. “Uncle Lum” Sterling Departed This Life Last Friday Morning Crisfield’s Oldest Merchant, 89, Had Been In Failing Health for Sometime, Succumbed At His Beautiful Home, “The Crow’s Nest” For more than three-quarters of a century, Isaac Columbus Sterling had been an outstanding figure in the life of Crisfield. Even before the city got its name, he was here. Today, he sleeps in the city of the silent people, among the remains of his fellow townsmen for whom he supplied a final resting place, on the knoll between his beautiful home, “The Crow’s Nest” and Chesapeake avenue; for, on Friday morning last, the death angel called, and he quietly responded. “Uncle Lum” as he was known to thousands of people, was eighty-nine years of age. He was unmarried, and lived with his two nieces, Misses Hattie and Gertrude Somers at the oldest and one of the most beautiful residences within the city limits of Crisfield. He had resided there all his long and useful life. “The Crow’s Nest” was built in 1828. Mr. Sterling was tubercular, when a young man, but through adhering to the principle of healthful living, successfully fought off the disease, and lived to a ripe old age. His first employment was in an establishment downtown, where he acted as a clerk, selling cigars, tobaccos, and staple merchandise. Later, he was associated with Horsey Bros., and about fifty years ago, opened the store at the corner of what is now Somerset and Chesapeake avenues, where he has been proprietor ever since. His was a dry goods and notions business, and year after year, as the seasons came and passed, “Uncle Lum” dealt in a class of merchandise, the quality of which, was the peer in its line. A gentleman of high order, friendly, slow of speech, and full of cordiality, Mr. Sterling enjoyed a wide acquaintance, and the respect of all who knew him. Funeral services, largely attended, where conducted from his late home on Sunday afternoon, with Rev. Chas. M. Elderdice, his pastor, officiating, and interment was in the Crisfield cemetery, which his family established many years ago. A devout Christian, Mr. Sterling was almost constantly at his place at the Church, and last Easter, he decorated Mt. Pleasant Church, of which he was one of the oldest members, for the Easter Services. Besides the Misses Somers, he is survived by a number of nieces and nephews, his last surviving sister, Mrs. Annie Somers who reached the age of 96, died a few years ago.
