Dorsey served in the House of Delegates from 1940 to 1948. He retired as sheriff in 1970 after serving 16 years. He also had served as deputy sheriff from 1934 to 1938. Prior to that he had been a Somerset County Roads Department supervisor. Born in Westover, he was a son of the late William Dorsey and Addie Ross Dorsey. He was a life member and past commander of Stanley Cochrane Post 16 America Legion in Crisfield and a member of Crisfield Lodge 1044 Elks. He was also a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Crisfield. He was the last surviving veteran of World War I in this area and had served in the Army. During the war he was wounded by enemy machine-gun fire in France. His wife, Grace L. Sterling Dorsey, died in 1984. His son, Paul W. Dorsey, died in 1988. He is survived by a daughter, Alberta D. Kellner, Crisfield; a sister, Rose D. Cornell, Brown City, Mich., and several nieces and nephews. "Ike" Dorsey, a former member of the Maryland House of Delegates, former somerset County Sheriff and a World War I veteran, died last Wednesday, June 20, 1990 at the age of 94 at the Perry Point Veterans Hospital. A native of Westover and later a resident of Crisfield, Dorsey served as Sheriff for 16 years, retiring in 1970. A Democrat, his platform included "fair treatment to everybody." He served two terms in the General Assembly between 1940 through 1948 and previous to that he was a deputy sheriff from 1934-38. Dorsey had also been the Somerset County Roads Department supervisor. As a member of the U. S. Army fighting in France during World War I, Dorsey was wounded by enemy machine-gun fire. Contemporaries of his while Sheriff included then County Commissioner Robert H. Bradshaw Sr. who said Dorsey "was devoted to his work.. (especially) in law enforcement. He said Dorsey would only come to the commissioners "when he needed something. He didn't ask for taxpayer's money unless it was a necessity." Bradshaw said it was probably Dorsey's time with County Roads that gave him the knack of knowing every road and lane, plus where every family lived. "Few people called him Ike. They called him sheriff," he said. Thomas H. Foxwell, who succeeded Dorsey as Sheriff in 1970 called Dorsey "the best politician other than Harry T. Phoebus Sr. to serve the County. He would take care of his job, and I admired him." Foxwell, who is now a County commissioner, said Dorsey was a man "dedicated to the County and he lived up to his dedication." Ralph Parks, former director for Veteran Affairs, said he acted as a chauffeur for Dorsey during one of his campaigns. He added that for the past 20 years, Dorsey would attend Old Timers Night at the Cochran American Legion Post, which he was a member. It is believed that Dorsey may have been the last WWI veteran in the area. "He was alright in my book," Parks said. And "God knows he was a Democrat." Dorsey was married to the late Grace L. Sterling Dorsey, who died in 1984. Their son, Paul W. Dorsey died in 1988. Survivors include a daughter Alberta D. Kellner, Crisfield; a sister, Rose D. Cornell, Brown City, Mich.; and several nieces and nephews.
