'Neath the shady branches of fragrant cedars in old St. Peter's cemetery, sleeps the last mortal remains of Isaac Henry Coulbourn, pioneer citizen and prominent business man, whose sudden death at his office in Crisfield last Friday afternoon, was chronicled in this paper on Saturday last. Another sturdy oak has fallen by the wayside; another noble character has answered the call of its creator. Henry Coulbourn, the name by which he was known and loved, was the oldest son of William Coulbourn of Isaac, and his wife, Henrietta Berry Coulbourn. He was born at "Comfort," better known as the Coulbourn farm, just north of Crisfield, Aug. 21st, 1852. Educated at Dickerson Seminary, Williamsport, Pa., Mr. Coulbourn graduated from that college at the early age of nineteen years. He began his business career in Crisfield in 1872, as junior partner of the firm of Coulbourn, Croswell & Co. In the winter of 1875 he was married to Jennie E. Roach daughter of the late William H. Roach of Hopewell. Later Mr. Coulbourn withdrew from the firm of Coulbourn, Croswell & Co., and established a large oyster business under the firm name of Long, Coulbourn & Co., having associated with him, Geo. W. and Wm. H. Long, both now deceased. Several years later he was one of the organizers and leading factors in the in the organization of the Tangier Packing Company, which did a general seafood business and was the first firm in the United States to successfully can soft crabs and general sea food. Upon the reorganization of the Tangier Packing Co., Mr. Coulbourn withdrew, and has since been extensively engaged in the oyster business as head of the Maryland Packing Co. Mr. Coulbourn's business career was an active one since his early manhood. He was a pioneer in the business life of Crisfield and was prominently identified with many of its most important industries. He held several positions of importance and trust with public institutions with which he was connected among them being President of the Bank of Crisfield, and President of the Crisfield Ice Manufacturing Co. His judgement and advise on business matters was frequently sought by the leading business men of the town and county, and no important enterprise was considered complete without Mr. Coulbourn's connection. As an individual Mr. Coulbourn was a man of the strongest personal entity. He was noble and unselfish in his daily life, possessed high ideals and maintained them as his standard of living. He was a pleasant, courteous gentleman, held in the highest admiration and esteem by the people of Crisfield and Somerset County. In his home those traits of character belonging to the old-fashioned southern gentleman, were most evident, and the cordiality of his welcome was a source of much pleasure to his host of friends and neighbors. The sudden death of this well-known and much beloved citizen, was a terrible shock to the people of the entire county, and his memory will be cherished throughout the years to come. Funeral services were held at his late home on central Main Street, Monday morning last, with Rev. J. Vernon Ashworth, Rev. F. T. Benson and officiating. Hosts of acquaintances from all parts of the County and adjoining territory crowded the home to pay their last tribute of love and respect to the dead. Many beautiful floral tributes were presented by heart torn friends. Mr. Coulbourn is survived by his widow, and four children; two sons—Dr. Wm. H. Coulbourn, a prominent physician of Crisfield, and Mr. Hugh Coulbourn of New York; two daughters—Misses Bessie Carolyn and Ethel Henrietta Coulbourn, both of Crisfield. Other immediate relatives are two sisters, Mrs. Clara Croswell of Chicago, and Mrs. Fred A. Gunby of Irvington, Va., and one brother, Mr. William R. Coulbourn of Roanoke, Va.
