Saylor, 81, who died at his home here Saturday morning from a stroke. He had suffered with rheumatism for some time, but had been able to be about practically until the time of his death. Rev. J. Clyde Keegan of Brush, former pastor of the local Methodist Church, preached the funeral sermon. A quartet, composed of Mrs. A.W. McFadden, Mrs. R.N. White, G.L. Bereman and Billie Sprague, sang and a violin selection was played by Bette Sprague. Pall bearers were long time residents of the county, C.P.A. Kayser, Milo Kepler, C.P. Peterson, Glen Lewis, John Arens and F.B. Flanagan. Burial was made in the Holyoke cemetery. Isaac Homer Saylor was born August 17, 1855, at Rushville, Illinois, at which place he spent the early part of his life. His father died when he was thirteen years old and from that time on he took on the responsibilities as the head of the family. He worked around in that community until 1878, when he went to Alda, Nebraska, near Grand Island. The rest of the family moved the next year to the farm which he purchased there. He lived there until 1886. At that time seeing the possibilities of ranching and farming in Colorado, he homesteaded northwest of Holyoke before this town had come into existence. He often told of his early experiences, how it took two days to make the trip to Julesburg for supplies and a half day to make the trip to a well on the Frenchman for water. He and Nellie Sprague were married at Holyoke May 1, 1890. They made their new home one and one-half miles north of his first homestead. In those early days they never thought of this being a dry country as the buffalo wallows and slough were usually full of water. In 1891 he saved 13 acres of barley out of a 39-acre field which, although being hailed in the shock, threshed out better than 40 bushels to the acre. In August 1894, he went to Greeley to work. He ran a threshing machine until December 1st. Having saved $100, he bought a winter supply of vegetables and returned home to find he had lost one of his horses and the mate died before the winter was over. In the succeeding years the cows and the milk cans were the usual means of support. Five of the six children were born on the farm northwest of Holyoke: Ethel, Harry, William, Robert and Edith. Helen was born in the town of Holyoke in 1897, at which time Mr. Saylor and Harry Sprague ran a butcher shop there. In the spring of 1898 they moved back to the farm. In 1912 they built a nice, large home on the farm which had been planned years before but had never materialized. They lived in this new home until 1930 when they moved to Holyoke. Mr. Saylor took an active part in many activities. He was an active member of the Democratic party in Phillips County for several years. He served as a director of the Phillips County Shipping Association and was one of its first members. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias Lodge of Holyoke and was a prominent member of that organization for many years that it was active here. He belonged to the Farmers Co-Operative Elevator and took an active interest in its operation until his death. Surviving Mr. Saylor are his wife; six children, Harry, William and Robert of Holyoke, Mrs. Helen Underwood of Hayden, Colorado, Mrs. Edith Davis of Del Rio, Texas, and Mrs. Ethel Lookhart of Holyoke; one sister, Mrs. Lydia Swazen of the state of Washington; and two brothers, Frank and Dwight Saylor of Holyoke.
