Read More	Holyoke Enterprise, Holyoke, Colorado, May 4, 1939 LAST RITES ARE HELD FOR WILLIAM SAYLOR World War Veteran Dies After Five Months' Illness; Lifetime Resident Here Military funeral services were accorded William Freedom Saylor, World war veteran and a lifetime Phillips County resident, Wednesday afternoon at the Legion hall at 2:00 p.m. Mr. Saylor died Sunday evening, April 30, ending a tragic illness of almost five months duration. He was 45 years of age. The funeral services, in the charge of Holyoke Post No. 90 American Legion, were confined to the simplest form of military funeral. Rev. H.L. Taylor, pastor of the Presbyterian church officiated. G.L. Bereman, W.H. Rouze, C.A. Mowry and Dr. P.S. Struble, as a quartet, sang, with accompaniment by Mrs. Rouze, who played the processional and recessional. Interment was made in the Holyoke cemetery. Mr. Saylor saw service overseas during the World war and was fighting at the front in the Somme Sector and in the famous Meuse-Argonne battle at the time the Armistice was signed. He attained the rank of corporal, receiving his promotion on April 18, 1919, prior to his discharge from the service on June 27, 1919, at Fort D.A. Russell, Wyoming. He escaped injury during the war, but his letters home, although written with a humorous touch revealed bitter hardships and almost unbearable conditions. Writing of the Meuse-Argonne encounter, he told of how, to escape the rats and the mud of the trenches, he lay on the ground beside the trench while the night was split with shells bursting overhead. A member of the 322nd Infantry, he also was stationed at Saint Die for a period. He was mustered into service on October 2, 1917, at Holyoke. Mr. Saylor, aside from his war service and a few months during his early manhood when he worked on a Wyoming ranch, spent his entire life on or near the family home northwest of Holyoke. He was born there in the days when the cross-country trail to Holyoke was but nine miles, and he grew up to hunt coyotes and rabbits on the range between tasks of helping his father with the ranching and the farming done by means of the old hand plow and similar implements. He saw ranching give way more and more to farming, and upon the retirement of his father, he and his brothers took over the responsibility of the farm. Following his marriage, he operated a nearby farm for a time but returned shortly to the home place, which has been the home of himself and his brother, Robert, and their families for a number of years. Hunting and fishing were always favorite sports with him, and he cemented many of his numerous friendships on these pleasure jaunts. He was respected for his courage to defend his own convictions, and that he followed unswervingly the edict of the Golden Rule in the actions of his entire life time is attested to by his family, his neighbors and acquaintances. Mr. Saylor was born on December 13, 1893. He was married to Miss Emma Cochell on December 12, 1926 at Holyoke, and they became the parents of three sons, Kenton Keith, Jack Maurice and James Isaac. Mr. Saylor's final illness commenced early last December, and he was treated at home and in Holyoke for two months before being removed to the Holyoke hospital on February 15, when he submitted to an incision for drainage of an abscess resulting from ruptured appendix. Due to his weakened condition and complications which followed, he failed to make any marked recovery, and about a month before his death, an operation was performed to open the intestinal tract. A post mortem showed the outcome of the operation to be satisfactory but that the immediate cause of death was toxic poisoning from a previously undiscovered pus pocket. Surviving Mr. Saylor are his widow, Mrs. Emma Saylor, and three sons, Kent, Jack and James, his mother, Mrs. Nellie Saylor; two brothers, Harry and Robert of Holyoke; three sisters, Mrs. Orval Lookhart of Holyoke, Mrs. Henry Underwood of Hayden and Mrs. John Lorence of Del Rio, Texas; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his father, I.H. Saylor on April 3, 1937. He was a past member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. MANY RELATIVES ATTEND W.F. SAYLOR FUNERAL Out of town relatives who attended the funeral services held yesterday afternoon for William F. Saylor were Mrs. H. W. Donaldson of Grand Island, Nebraska, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur McKee of North Platte, Nebraska, Ford Wanamaker of Imperial, Nebraska, Mrs. H.L. Chase of Denver and Mr. and Mrs. Harry A. DeBolt of Torrington, Wyoming. The Nebraska people returned to their homes Wednesday night. Mrs. Chase, a sister of Mrs. Nellie Saylor, is remaining for a visit with relatives. Haxtun people who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Woodhams, Doris Ramsay, Mrs. Harvey Smith, Mrs. John R. Wright, Mrs. Emil Kindig, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Smith and Fred Donaldson.
