Herrell Brown, departed this life at his home near Burnsville, Braxton Co., WV at the close of the day August 23, 1919, having reached the age of 77years, 2 months, and 2 days. Mr. Brown was born June 21, 1842 in Fauquier Co, VA In 1852, he with his parents, moved to what is now Braxton Co. WV, where he grew to manhood. Brown, son of Alfred W. Brown and Nancy H. Herrell Brown, departed this life at his home near Burnsville, Braxton Co., WV at the close of the day August 23, 1919, having reached the age of 77years, 2 months, and 2 days. Mr. Brown was born June 21, 1842 in Fauquier Co, VA In 1852, he with his parents, moved to what is now Braxton Co. WV, where he grew to manhood. When the conflict between the North and the South came, his sympathies were with the South. He volunteered and enlisted with the 25th Virginia Infantry, and was assigned to the army of the Potomac. He saw extremely hard service in many battles of the war, notably the battle of Gettysburg. At the battle of Allegheny, December 13, 1861, he lost his left arm. After his wound healed, he rejoined his regiment and was a successful and loyal soldier to the close of the war. When the war ended and he was discharged, he returned to the home of his parents in Braxton Co. In 1866, he was united in marriage to Elzara Conrad, a daughter of Chrisman Conrad. To this union was born 10 children, 6 sons and 4 daughters: 8 of whom are living. The surviving sons are Homer, George David, Alfred W, Grover S. and Thomas A. The living daughters are Mrs. Martha C. Haymond, Mrs. Mary E. McPherson and Mrs. Nannie E. Knight. The deceased are Daniel C., who departed this life in 1908 at the age of 33 years and Nannie A., who died in 1881, at the age of 18 months. His faithful wife preceded him to the life beyond fifteen years, having died in September, 1903, at the age of 59 years. Besides his children there mourn his death, his sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, many grandchildren, and a host of friends and neighbors.
