Samuel Lawson, one of Crisfield's outstanding citizens, for more than fifty years a prominent and leading funeral Director, a man with an unusually wide circle of kinfolks, friends and acquaintances, died at his home on Somerset avenue Sunday night shortly before eleven o'clock. Mr. Lawson had been in poor health for some months, most of that time confined to his home, yet the news of his death was a shock to the community. Born in the Calvary section, near Crisfield, he was the son of the late Isaac Lawson and Nancy Tawes Lawson, families which were among the early settlers in this community, and which from generation to generation have been sturdy supporters of their religion, active in public affairs, and energetic in the pursuit of their livelihoods. His birthday was April 4th, 1858, and he would have been 84 years of age had he lived until the coming April. The Lawson family has had in it large landowners, merchants, men engaged in the seafood business on land, watermen who caught oysters and crabs in their season, captains of ships, and others engaged in various trades and professions here and in many other parts of the nation. As a young man Mr. Lawson was a painter and decorator, and followed that profession for some time after he had engaged in the undertaking profession. His first place of business was where the Rawdon P. Whittington building now stands, next to the Post Office. He has been heard to comment, on occasion, that he didn't know why he became en undertaker, unless it was that the community needed another one at the time he started in the business, but for more than half a century he gave his best to this profession, and when homes were visited by death, his gentle and sympathetic manner made the pain of taking the last leave of loved ones less severe. In his young days the firm of Patterson & Whittington were the leading undertakers here. One of the members of this firm died, and the other decided to retire. Mr. Lawson didn't exactly succeed this firm; rather he shortly took over where they left off. As a youth he affiliated with Asbury Methodist Episcopal Church, and later, when he came into the city proper to live, he changed his membership to Immanuel Methodist Episcopal Church. He was, all his life, a militant Methodist, believing most sincerely in its doctrines, and practicing them in his everyday life. He had strong likes and dislikes, abhorred hypocrisy, and was outspoken in his opinions on all subjects. For many years he had been a member of the Official Board of Immanuel Church, loved to attend the meetings of the Board where his advice was sought and highly valued. Except because of illness or the demands of his profession, he was regular in his attendance at church meetings, and it might be said that the stronger the attack by a minister on the forces of evil, the better he enjoyed the sermons. For a great many of his years he was active in Lodge work, especially that of the Knights of Pythias. At the time of his death he was the oldest member of Annamessex Lodge, K. of P. here. Dr. Gordon T. Atkinson, who died January 14th this year had been the eldest up to the time of his death. Very few people can remember the time when Mr. Lawson did not keep a store, where an endless variety of pottery, pictures, bric-a-brac, and countless other items were on sale. He was a great flower lover, and not only sold seed and bulbs and plants, but grew many varieties of beautiful flowers in his garden and yards at his home. When the Delmarva Funeral Association was formed some years ago he became a member and as long as he could do so, attended each session of that body, getting a great deal of pleasure and satisfaction out of the meetings. He was the oldest member of that organization. A man of fine personality, intelligent beyond the ordinary, his courtesy and gentlemanness with people in all walks of life were unfailing, his sociability made for him strong friends, and he was regarded by everyone as the finest type of Christian gentleman. A strong advocate of temperance, he took the pledge to abstain from strong drink early in his life, and lived up to that pledge faithfully through all his years. Always liberal in his contributions to his church and other worthy causes, he was also one of the first to respond to the appeal for help from the poor and unfortunate, and many of them he helped over periods in which they would have endured real suffering without his aid. Mr. Lawson was one of the few remaining old-timers who lived here when the city was young, watched and helped in its growth, disapproved in some measure of the changes succeeding decades brought, but kept his faith in his Creator and his fellowmen in full abundance. It could well be said of him that he stood as a rock, unmoved by the storms and tempests of life, serenely confident that the best and the right would finally prevail, even when the forces of darkness, as he saw them, were strongest, a Patriarch, whose concept of this life and the life to come was that laid bare by the Holy Bible. Funeral services were held at his home on Somerset avenue Wednesday afternoon, with Dr. J. Yancey Fincher, pastor of the Baptist Temple, who had resided with Mr. Lawson and his family for many months when he began his pastorate here, in charge. Dr. Fincher was assisted by Rev. J. R. Bicking, pastor of Mr. Lawson's church, Immanuel, and by Dr. Herman Bischof, pastor of Rehoboth Presbyterian Church, a longtime friend. At the grave services were held by Annamessex Lodge Knights of Pythias. Interment was in Sunnyridge Memorial Park cemetery. The pall-bearers, all members of the Knights of Pythias, were Maurice Daugherty, Marvin Tawes, Clifton Charnick, Wilson Somers, Clarence Bethard and Herman Landon. Honorary pall-bearers were members of the Delmarva Funeral Association. He is survived by his widow, two sons, Herbert A. Lawson, of Washington, D. C., and Gordon Lawson, of Crisfield, who has been associated with his father in business for years; two daughters, Mrs. Elsie Lawson Sterling, of Crisfield, and Mrs. Irwin Jones, of Snow Hill; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
