Description	:	Isabella McMillan was born at Shannochie on the Isle of Arran, Buteshire, Scotland, the daughter of Donald McMillan and Barbara Shaw. She emigrated when she was 22 years old with her parents and siblings from Scotland to the Chaleur Bay in northeastern New Brunswick, settling at Blackland. She married Archibald McNair on January 19, 1832, in the settlement of New Mills, and shortly after the birth of their first child, the family moved to the southern end of Heron Island. It was there that the remaining McNair children were born. Isabella's children included Nathaniel (1832-1894), Margaret (1835-), Barbara (1837-1853), Donald (1839-), Mary (1841-), John (1844-), Jean (1846-) James (1841-1921), Archibald (1851-) and Barbara (1853). The McNairs were among the earliest Scottish pioneers to settle on the Island. Five miles long and one mile wide, each area on the island had a name -- Rocky Point, The West Bar, Deadman's Cove and The Pier, to name a few. It was home to a large variety of birds and an abundant amount of fish. There were no buildings on the island other than a lighthouse and the farm houses built by the settlers. A single gravel road ran the length of the island and it was by means of this road that all the settlers were able to visit with each other. Houses were heated by the driftwood that collected on the beaches; wash was done by rainwater that was collected in barrels; and indoor plumbing did not exist. Isabella lived on Heron Island until her death in 1888.
