Description	:	Mrs. C. G. Barns, pioneer resident of this county, beloved by all who knew her, passed away at her home in Madison, Sunday, February 2nd, at the age of 83 years, 11 months and 11 days. Isabella Smith, second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. T. Smith, was born February 21st, 1852, in London, England. While she was still a small girl her parents immigrated to the United States on one of the old-time sailing boats which took five weeks to cross the Atlantic. Barns, pioneer resident of this county, beloved by all who knew her, passed away at her home in Madison, Sunday, February 2nd, at the age of 83 years, 11 months and 11 days. Isabella Smith, second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. T. Smith, was born February 21st, 1852, in London, England. While she was still a small girl her parents immigrated to the United States on one of the old-time sailing boats which took five weeks to cross the Atlantic. Arriving in New York, the family settled in Owego, where they remained for several years before moving to La Porte, Indiana. In June 1871, she was married to Dr. C. G. Barns at La Porte. They remained there subsequent to their marriage until April, 1881 at which time they moved to the vicinity of Albion, Nebraska. The first several months of life in Boone county were in a sod house for a home. They remained at Albion with the exception of two years residence in Lincoln, until 1923, at which time they moved to Madison. She is survived by two sons, Dr. Frank M. Barns, of Albion; and Don G. Barns, of Cleveland, Ohio; and one daughter, Viola Barns, professor of history in Mount Holyoke college at Holyoke, Massachusetts; three grandchildren and one brother, Henry Smith, of Albion. Dr. Barns died in September, 1932 and one daughter, Mrs. Ruby Waugh of Lincoln, passed away in July, 1934. Since their residence in Nebraska, Mrs. Barns has been an active worker in the Methodist church and its various organizations. On Sunday preceding the attack, which was the beginning of the end, she took active part in the Sunday school, even though weather conditions were very disagreeable. The body was brought to Albion Tuesday night and Wednesday afternoon funeral services were held at the Methodist church, conducted by Rev. Victor West. Interment was in Rose Hill cemetery where Dr. Barns was laid to rest. (Albion Weekly News – Albion, Nebraska – February 6, 1936)
