Description	:	Henry R. Smith, Boone county pioneer, died at the home of his son, Roy E. Smith, in Sterling, Colorado, early Friday morning, January 12, at the age of 80 years, five months and three days. His death followed that of his wife by less than three months, Mrs. Smith passing away at Sterling on October 27. Smith, in Sterling, Colorado, early Friday morning, January 12, at the age of 80 years, five months and three days. His death followed that of his wife by less than three months, Mrs. Smith passing away at Sterling on October 27. Mr. Smith had been in failing health for the past few years and since October had been critically ill. Henry Russell Smith was born August 9, 1859, at Owego, New York, the son of Mr. and Mrs. E. T. Smith, who came to this country from England. The family moved to LaPort, Indiana, and in 1881 Mr. Smith came to Boone county, Nebraska, to engage in farming. He was married to Anna M. Cheney February 24, 1886, and for a period of years they resided on a farm in the Boone community. After retiring from the farm, Mr. and Mrs. Smith took up their residence in Albion during which time he served as county commissioner twelve years. He was a member of the Albion Methodist church. In his home life, in his associations with his fellows, and in public office, he was at all times above reproach. His death removed another of the rapidly diminishing group of pioneers who laid so well the foundations of this county and state. He was the last survivor of the brothers and sisters who made up the E. T. Smith family. Surviving him are his three sons, Roy E. and Floyd R. Smith of Sterling, Colorado, and Lynn Smith of this city. The body was brought to Albion and funeral services were held from the Smith home at 2:30 Sunday afternoon with Rev. Jas. McKeeman officiating. Burial was made in Rose Hill cemetery. (Albion Weekly News – Albion, Nebraska – January 18, 1940)
