Israel Lagasse, who was here from Minnesota for the summer, was drowned in the pond on the Beland farm last night. Lagasse was working for Harry Heaton, and in company with about twelve of the men who had been working in the harvest field, went down to the pond for a swim. Lagasse was a good swimmer and jumped in the water first. The pond was about 10-12 feet deep and Lagasse came up from his dive and called for help. The men thinking he was joking them, paid no attention to him and he went down and came up the second time and then disappeared. The men by this time, realized that something was wrong and went in after him but when they brought his body up, life was extinct. Dr. Weaver was called but could do nothing after so long a time. The young man would have been 22 years old today if he had lived. His mother and step-father live in Minnesota and he came here to spend the summer with relatives. No funeral arrangements will be made until word comes from his people in Minnesota. This is the first case drowning in or near Concordia for several years and has been a terrible shock to his friends and relatives. It is thought that he went in the water when hot and tired and was taken with a cramp.
