Description	:	Iva Mae Dean, fourth child of Nelson I. Dean and Melissa A. Swart Dean, was born April 29, 1882, in Chase County near Cottonwood Falls. At the age of four her family moved to a homestead southwest of Jetmore. When she was seven, she and her family moved to a ranch near Magadelena, N.M., and later her father became foreman in a lead and silver mine at Kelly, N.M. Read More	Iva Mae Dean, fourth child of Nelson I. Dean and Melissa A. Swart Dean, was born April 29, 1882, in Chase County near Cottonwood Falls. At the age of four her family moved to a homestead southwest of Jetmore. When she was seven, she and her family moved to a ranch near Magadelena, N.M., and later her father became foreman in a lead and silver mine at Kelly, N.M. When Mae was 12, her family moved back to a farm near Jetmore. Upon completing her formal education she began teaching in rural schools around Jetmore. She was united in marriage to Frank E. Farmer December 11, 1906, at Jetmore. They made their home with Frank’s father on a farm near Jetmore, where both their children were born. Her husband owned and operated a threshing machine for 20 years. During this time the family lived in Jetmore, Dodge City, Ness City, Larned, Utica and Arnold. They moved to Ransom in 1920. While living in Ransom, Mae operated a creamery. She cooked at the Grisell Memorial Hospital, then she and Frank operated the Ransom Hotel, which later they bought. In their declining years they changed it to a rest home for older people. When she became too ill and unable to maintain it any longer she began living with her children and grandchildren. She entered the nursing home March 19, 1971. She was admitted to the hospital November 14, 1975, and departed this life March 4, 1976. She belonged to and attended church all of her young life and in later years she was baptized into the church of Christ, which she attended faithfully until her heath failed her. Her husband Frank, preceded her in death. Those who live to remember her, are her children: Wilbur L. and wife, Elma, Mrs. Hollis Stowe, and husband of WaKeeney; nine grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Pearl Knoeller of Jetmore: nephews, nieces, many friends and loved ones.
