Burial will be in Washington Cemetery near Havelock, Iowa. Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, 2009, at the Powers Funeral Home in Pocahontas. Ivan Arthur Martens was born March 18, 1914, on a farm north of Pocahontas. He was the son of Albert and Mary (Wolkenhour) Martens. Ivan was educated in the Pocahontas and Ware schools. He farmed with his father in the Ware and Havelock area. He met the love of his life, Joy Van Horsen, and they were married Christmas Day 1940 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Laurens. Together they farmed north of Havelock for 40 years, retiring in the late 1980's. The couple were inseparable and thoroughly enjoyed life dancing, traveling, RVing, and spending time with friends and neighbors. Winters were spent in south Texas and sunny Arizona. Ivan was baptized in the Lutheran Church and later transferred his membership to the Havelock United Methodist Church. He served on the church board, local school board, and was a 4-H leader for a number of years. Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 69 years, Joy; their children, David (Mary) Martens of Pocahontas/Mesa, Ariz., Mary Jo (Lee) Vial of Marshalltown/Mesa, Ariz., and James Martens of Charlotte, N.C.; cherished grandchildren, Jeffrey (Shannah Hodge) of Belleview, Fla., Vicki-Vial Taylor (David Miller) of Mendota Heights, Minn., Valari (Pat) Beurskens of Marshalltown and Scott (Betsy) Vial of DuPont, Wash.; treasured great-grandchildren, Kelsey and Conner Beurskens, Grant and Mason Taylor, Isaac "Little Ike" and Samuel Vial, and Kelli Hodge. Those he will join in eternity: his parents; infant son, Ricky; brothers, Byron and Kenneth; sister, Irene Eberle; in-laws, cousins and many many friends. Ike's family is so appreciative of Hospice services, the angelic caregiver Carmella Peterson and special visits from Bob and Theresa Kleen with "Bambi."
