Left to mourn her loss are three children including daughter Mary Jo (Lee) Vial of Marshalltown and four grandchildren: Jeffrey (Donna) Martens of Ocala, FL. Vicki-Vial Taylor (David Miller) of Mendota Heights, MN, Valari (Pat) Beurskens of Marshalltown and Scott (Betsy) Vial of Lakeville, MN., and treasured great-grandchildren. Biography Joy Martens, age 95, of Pocahontas peacefully passed away January 18, 2018, at Iowa River Hospice Home in Marshalltown, Iowa with family near her. Joy was born June 3rd, 1922, the daughter of Bertha (Martin) and O.D. Van Horsen. She grew up in Havelock, delivering newspapers to everyone in town. In 1939, she was chosen Miss Havelock and began to proudly represent the community at fairs, parades and town celebrations for many years. She graduated from Havelock High School as saluetorian of her class and worked at the local café and telephone office. Joy married the love of her life, a tall handsome farmer, Ivan “Ike” Martens on Christmas Day 1940. Together they farmed north of Havelock for 40 years. They moved into Havelock and later a new retirement twin home in Pocahontas. The inseparable couple thoroughly enjoyed their 69 years together before Ike’s passing in 2009. Winters were spent in South Texas and Mesa, AZ, where lasting friendships and memories were made. A loving caregiver, Carmella Peterson shared Joy and Ikes retirement home in Pocahontas for several years. Carmella became the family angel. Joy was baptized in the Havelock Methodist Church and actively involved herself for over 90 years, serving on many boards and as Sunday School teacher to many children. She enjoyed social groups, playing cards, Rving, traveling with family and friends and most of all dancing with her favorite partner. The years of helping Jim at the Arizona Renaissance Festival were special. Left to cherish her beautiful smile are her children, David (Mary) Martens of Pocahontas; Mary Jo (Lee) Vial of Marshalltown; James Martens of Cornelius, NC; grandchildren, Jeffrey (Donna) Martens of Ocala, FL; Vicki Vial Taylor (David Miller) of Mendota Heights, MN; Valari (Patrick) Beurskens of Marshalltown; Scott (Elizabeth) Vial of Lakeville, MN; great-grandchildren, Grant and Mason Taylor, Kelsey and Connor Beurskens and Isaac and Samuel Vial; sister, Janet (Dick) Waters; sister-in-law, Betty Van Horsen and numerous nieces and nephews.
