Description	:	Ivan Ernest Valentine was born April 22, 1922 on the family farm near Egan, South Dakota to James Valentine and Myrtle Bemis Valentine. Ivan graduated from Egan High School in 1941. Ivan joined the Marine Corps in June 1942. His military service was a very important and defining part of his life. He toured throughout the Pacific during his time with the Marines. Read More	Ivan Ernest Valentine was born April 22, 1922 on the family farm near Egan, South Dakota to James Valentine and Myrtle Bemis Valentine. Ivan graduated from Egan High School in 1941. Ivan joined the Marine Corps in June 1942. His military service was a very important and defining part of his life. He toured throughout the Pacific during his time with the Marines. He saw action in Guam, Bougainville, Guadalcanal, and British Solomon Islands. Ivan received an honorable discharge from the Marines in October 1945. Ivan met his wife and soon to be life mate Mary O'Meara in Hastings, Nebraska prior to his discharge from the Marines. They married in Eddyville, Nebraska on February 7, 1946. Ivan and Mary moved back to the Egan area where he was to begin his lifelong pursuit of educational goals. He enrolled at South Dakota State College in Brookings. During this time he and his brother John Valentine ran a heating and plumbing business. In the late forties Ivan worked installing electric distribution facilities for the REA in the Moody county area. Ivan graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1950. Ivan was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant, Army Intelligence, in the U.S. Army reserves in June 1950. Ivan and Mary moved to Faith, South Dakota where he taught Trade and Industrial Education, Chemistry, and Algebra. He coached basketball and football. They stayed in Faith until 1951. Ivan and Mary moved from Faith to Belle Fourche in 1951. Ivan was the vocational and adult education director. Ivan traveled to Fort Collins, Colorado to pursue his masters degree at then Colorado A&M (now C.S.U.). Ivan received his masters degree in administration in vocational education in 1958. Ivan and Mary fell in love with the Fort Collins area, and would someday make Fort Collins their home. Ivan, Mary, and their son Tim moved to Raleigh, North Carolina in 1959. Ivan was the state director of technical institutes for the state board of education. In 1960 Ivan received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Army reserve. Ivan and Mary had a son Kevin, in September of 1960. Ivan was the assistant state director for community colleges from 1963 to 1967. Ivan played a critical role in establishing a statewide system of community colleges, technical institutes, and area vocational schools in North Carolina. In 1966 there were forty-three various institutions in the state of North Carolina with an enrollment of thousands of students. In 1967 the family moved to Columbus, Ohio where Ivan continued his life-long quest for education by enrolling at Ohio State University. He received his Ph.D. in Vocational Administration, and Administration of Higher Education in 1969. Ivan and his family moved back to Fort Collins in 1969. This would be their permanent home, and where the family was raised. Ivan was professor in charge of administration and supervision at CSU from 1969 until his retirement in 1989. Ivan touched countless lives in his years as an educator. He helped scores of people achieve their educational and career goals of receiving masters and doctoral degrees. Ivan loved woodworking, gardening, spending time at the family cabin in the mountains, fishing, hunting and reading. Ivan and his son Kevin made several fishing trips to Canada, Wyoming, Montana, and Alaska. The adventures Ivan and Kevin enjoyed together in Alaska always held a special place in each other's hearts. Ivan Valentine dedicated his life to the service of his county, conning education, and the advancement of others. If any person had a full life, it was Ivan. He was a loving husband and father. His courage, strength, and sense of humor even during his time of illness is a testimony to his depth of character. His life was the true embodiment of the Marine Corps motto – Semper Fidelis – always faithful. He will be deeply missed by friends and family, but never forgotten. His spirit will continue on in all the lives he touched. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Mary Valentine of Ft. Collins, Colorado; two sons, Tim and his wife Silvana Valentine of Denver, Colorado, Kevin Valentine of Denver, Colorado; one granddaughter, Tammi Santos of Boston, Massachusetts; one brother, John Valentine of Egan, South Dakota; one sister, Margie Chamley of Egan, South Dakota; several nieces and nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends. Ivan was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Virgil Valentine as an infant; and a sister Evelyn Rush. Ivan died Saturday, February 02, 2002 at the Columbine Care Center West, in Ft. Collins, Colorado. Interment with military honors by the American Legion Post #97 of Egan, will be in the Hillside Cemetery, Egan, South Dakota. Arrangements are with the Rush Funeral Home of Philip, South Dakota.
