Description	:	Ivan George Harken, age 86, of Aplington, Iowa was born on January 8, 1926, the son of Klaus and Malinda (Meyer) Harken. He received his education and graduated from Aplington High School. Ivan was a commissioned officer in the United States Navy after successful completion of the V12 Navy Officer's Training Program. On July 21, 1950, Ivan was united in marriage with Margaret Glenn at the Bangor Friends Church in Bangor, Iowa. They made their home in Aplington. Read More	Ivan George Harken, age 86, of Aplington, Iowa was born on January 8, 1926, the son of Klaus and Malinda (Meyer) Harken. He received his education and graduated from Aplington High School. Ivan was a commissioned officer in the United States Navy after successful completion of the V12 Navy Officer's Training Program. On July 21, 1950, Ivan was united in marriage with Margaret Glenn at the Bangor Friends Church in Bangor, Iowa. They made their home in Aplington. Ivan was the co-owner of Harken Lumber for many years. Ivan was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Aplington where he served as an elder. He was the secretary of the Aplington School Board for over 40 years. Ivan was also on the Aplington City Council and many other community boards and organizations. Ivan enjoyed woodworking and traveling with Margaret, especially the time they spent at the family cabin in Northern Minnesota. Ivan died at his home in Aplington on April 7, 2012 of natural causes. He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Margaret; and one brother, Donald Harken. Ivan is survived by three daughters, Melinda Sue (Dave) Muller of Aplington, Iowa, Margaret Diane (Willie) Brown of Kansas City, Kansas, and Janet Ann (Travis) Simpson of Urbandale, Iowa; two sons, Jack Ivan (Brenda) Harken of Aplington, Iowa, and James David (Keely) Harken of Grundy Center, Iowa; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one brother Karl (Sandy) Harken of Aplington, IA; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, April 11, 2012, at First Presbyterian Church with burial in Pleasant View Cemetery, both in Aplington. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church 917 Howard Street, Aplington and will continue for one hour prior to services at the church. Memorials may be directed to the family for the Ivan & Margaret Harken Memorial Scholarship.
