Description	:	Karl Harken, age 82, of Aplington, Iowa, was born the son of Klaas and Malinda (Meyer) Harken on June 26, 1932, at home in Aplington. He graduated from the Aplington High School in 1950. Following graduation he began working for his father at Harken Lumber in Aplington, along with his brother Ivan. Read More	Karl Harken, age 82, of Aplington, Iowa, was born the son of Klaas and Malinda (Meyer) Harken on June 26, 1932, at home in Aplington. He graduated from the Aplington High School in 1950. Following graduation he began working for his father at Harken Lumber in Aplington, along with his brother Ivan. Karl was united in marriage with LeAnn Mae Ascher on May 12, 1952, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Wellsburg, Iowa. The couple made their home in Aplington. On March 3, 1953, Karl was drafted into the United States Army. He served overseas with the 141st Tank Battalion and also Company “A” in Hanau, Germany, until he was honorably discharged on March 3, 1955. LeAnn passed away in 1980. Karl married Sandy Vanderwerf on February 27, 1982, at the First Presbyterian Church in Aplington. He retired after 50 years, but still enjoyed his daily time at the lumberyard for many years. Karl was an active and faithful member of First Presbyterian Church and served as a Trustee many terms. He was a long time member of the Aplington AMVETS and was privileged to attend the honor flight to Washington D.C. He had a great passion for the growth and advancement of the community. He served on the Aplington City Council several times; was an Aplington Volunteer Fireman for many years; assisted with the development of the Maple Manor Nursing Home; and was recognized as Aplington Citizen of the Year in 2013. Karl loved learning new jokes to tell and always had a funny story to share. Through the years he enjoyed pheasant hunting, golfing and traveling. Spending time with his family was most important, especially at the cabin on Lake Ponderosa. Karl went to heaven Saturday, February 21, 2015. He was preceded in death by wife, LeAnn Harken; his parents; and two brothers, Donald and Ivan Harken. Karl is survived by his wife of 32 years Sandy Harken of Aplington; three sons all of Aplington, Kelly (LeeAnn) Harken, Randy (Galene) Harken, and Derek (Jessie) Harken; seven grandchildren, Katie (Robert) Melrose, Mark Harken, Holli (Mike Kalkwarf) Harken, Matt (fiancée, Sarah Dunegan) Harken, Mallory (Matt) Morris, Colton Harken and Caylee Harken; three great-grandchildren, Kiara Morris, Jade Morris and Jeb Kalkwarf; two great-grandbabies to be, Kalkwarf and Melrose; and extended family. Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 24, 2015, at Aplington Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Aplington, with burial in Pleasant View Cemetery rural Aplington. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday, at Aplington Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Aplington, (319)346-1534, and one hour before services at the church. Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice, St Jude’s Children Research Hospital or Veteran's Honor Flight.
