Highland Recorder June 17, 1932 Sudden Death One of the most shocking deaths to occur in our midst, was that of Mr. Ivan S. Dever, prominent Mill Cap citizen, which occurred in Monterey, about eleven o’clock Monday morning. He was awaiting a hearing in county court - was in conversation with a friend, when cerebral apoplexy caused his immediate death; his friend saw him sinking and caught him before he struck the floor. He was taken to the local undertaking parlor and cared for until carried to his home at Mill Gap, late the same evening. Mr. Dever was 35 years of age son of the late Samuel G. Dever of Mill Gap and had lived at the Dever homestead his entire life. He possessed many fine traits of character and was considered an honest and upright citizen of his community, claiming a host of friends and acquaintances. He frequently served on various committees. He was a cattleman and farmer, and successful in all his dealings. The deceased is survived by his wife, three small children and one sister, Mrs. Jacob Lightner of Pocahontas, West Virginia. Funeral services were held Tuesday morning in the Green Hill church by Rev. C. A. Munsey, and was laid to rest in the cemetery nearby, before a number of sorrowing friends and relatives. Highland Recorder June 10, 1921 Ivan Dever, of Back Creek, fell out of a tree the other day while trying to hive a swarm of bees and received right bad bruises. Highland Recorder July 9, 1928 DWELLING STRUCK The residence of Ivan Dever, near Mill Gap, was struck by lightning a an early hour Monday morning, and Mr. Dever, who was standing just out side the house, was right seriously shocked. Recovering he ran to the sleeping-room of his two children but found them unhurt, though the room seemed filled with smoke. Mrs. Dever, who was at an opposite side of the house, was also uninjured. The roof was damaged, but if fire was started it was extinguished by the rain. Two lambs and a calf grazing on the lawr nearby, were killed. Mr. Dever’s escape was possibly due to protection afforded him by a pair of heavy rubber boots that he was wearing at the time. Highland Recorder March 25, 1927 Thunder storms, rare this early in the season, had occurred, one at least, of considerable severity. Ivan Dever of Mill Gap had three cattle killed by lightning on Thursday evening, two of them standing near a hay-pen while the third one was some distance away. Mr. Dever himself, it is believed, escaped by a mere chance. He was going to this very hay-pen to feed, and on the way discovered a turkey hen that had stolen her nest. The delay watching and following the turkey prevented his reaching the spot until after the bolt had descended, otherwise he would most likely have been killed.
