Description	:	John George Giske was born June 10, 1895 in Russia to Mr. and Mrs. Peter Giske. He came to America with his parents when he was five years old, arriving in January, 1901. They sailed on the Rhein from Bremen, Germany to Baltimore, Maryland and from there made their way to Naper, Nebraska. In 1905 the family moved to a homestead north of Gregory, South Dakota. Read More	John George Giske was born June 10, 1895 in Russia to Mr. and Mrs. Peter Giske. He came to America with his parents when he was five years old, arriving in January, 1901. They sailed on the Rhein from Bremen, Germany to Baltimore, Maryland and from there made their way to Naper, Nebraska. In 1905 the family moved to a homestead north of Gregory, South Dakota. Many years later, George's son described the move this way: "At the age of approximately 11 years old, he drove a team of horses and a wagon loaded with household goods and his parents with another wagon to south central South Dakota and homesteaded in a sod house." George grew up on the farm and eventually went into farming with his father. He was united in marriage to Frieda Korb at her mother's farm home on June 3, 1930. During the early years of their marriage Frieda and George lived on the homestead of his parents until they moved to a farm south of Gregory, South Dakota. In 1948 they moved into Gregory, where George was employed by the F.C. Krotter company, retiring in 1965. He was an active member of the United Church of Christ, serving as deacon and trustee. George died suddenly at home on September 11, 1972. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include three daughters and two sons; five grandchildren; and five sisters, Eva Giske and Mary Ring, both of Gregory, Katherine Krieger of Burke, Emilie Cassel of Ainsworth, and Martha Amen of Norfolk, Nebraska. Funeral services were held at United Church of Christ in Gregory.
