He was born December 27, 1925 in Florence, South Carolina, a son of the late Marcus Redding and Geneva Neal Ross Smith of Conway. He graduated from... Read More	J. Marcus Smith MYRTLE BEACH: Dr. J. Marcus Smith, a retired optometrist, 82, died Friday, May 16, 2008 at his home surrounded by family after a short illness. He was born December 27, 1925 in Florence, South Carolina, a son of the late Marcus Redding and Geneva Neal Ross Smith of Conway. His loving wife of 54 years, Frances Marian Johnson Smith, and his sister, Hannah Darden, both predeceased him. Dr. Smith graduated from Conway High School in 1942, and went to the University of South Carolina for one year before going to Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee. He graduated from Southern College of Optometry in 1946, but was too young legally to open a practice, so he worked in Columbia for one year before moving to Myrtle Beach in 1947 and opened his optometry practice, where he was the first eye doctor in Myrtle Beach. Dr. Smith married his childhood sweetheart on October 7, 1950 in Conway. Dr. Smith was very active in the Myrtle Beach Jaycees. He was the 1957 Jaycees Young Man of the Year. He was also very active in leading the youth program (MYF) of the First United Methodist Church in Myrtle Beach for many years. Dr. Smith was a contributing writer on local history for the Sun News. Survivors include three sons, J. Marcus "Marc" Smith Jr. and his wife, Sherry, and Dr. Franklin Neal Smith and his wife, Maria, both of Myrtle Beach, and David Ross Smith and his wife, Michelle, of Conway; and six grandchildren, Marcus Redding Smith II, William Nelson Smith, Anna Maria Smith, Luisa Neal Smith, Andrew Franklin Smith and Hilton Taylor Smith. Also surviving, is a special sister-in-law, Mary Johnson Bowie. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, May 18, 2008 in First United Methodist Church of Myrtle Beach, with the Rev. Kenneth B. Timmerman and the Rev. Jean Osborne officiating. Burial will follow the service in Lakeside Cemetery of Conway. The family received friends at McMillan-Small Funeral Home in Myrtle Beach, from 4 until 6 p.m. Saturday, May 17, 2008. Please sign an online register at www.msfh.
