The youngest of six siblings, Jack was born in Sunnyside, WA, to Jesse and Mary (Stobie) Van Horn on September 27, 1928. He graduated from Sunnyside High School in 1946. Jack remained in the Sunnyside-Grandview area his entire life where he was involved with various aspects of the agricultural industry. He was a farmer, a pesticide investigator for the state dept. of agriculture, and a field agent for Andrus & Roberts and the Washington Asparagus Growers Assn. Jack was devoted to his family and loved family gatherings, games, storytelling, and rehashing hunting and fishing adventures. He looked forward to sharing these things with his brothers, children, grandchildren, extended family, friends, or even strangers. But especially, Jack cherished these activities for 42 years with his beloved wife, Doris. He had an endearing sense of humor and made friends easily. Jack was an ardent sports fan and loved his Mariners and Seahawks. However, his passionate pleasures were fishing, bird hunting, and bird dogs (or any kind of dog). Despite a crippling childhood affliction with polio, Jack would not hesitate to hike miles of riverbank, sagebrush hills, sugarbeet fields or drain ditches. He became a truly amazing wingshot. His love for the outdoors was infectious and he passed it on to his children. In recent years, Jack fell in love with Jesus all over again. He greatly encouraged family members who are involved in church ministries and had a special joy for listening to Christian music. He is survived by his children Dallas Van Horn (Lynne) of Yakima, Vickie Roettger (Ron) of Prosser, Jerry Lehman (Kim) of Benton City, Laurie Yanez (Ray) of Zillah, Larry Lehman of Oklahoma, 19 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren. Jack was preceded in death by his wife Doris Van Horn, siblings, George Van Horn, Dorothy Smith, Bud Van Horn, Elmer Van Horn, Bob Van Horn, daughter, Dorie Swigart, and grandson, Brian Lehman. A Heartfelt thanks goes to the staff of Sheffield Manor for the affectionate care that they have provided. Viewing and visitation will be held on Monday, May 18, 2015 from 2:00 PM-8:00 PM at the Smith Funeral Home in Sunnyside, WA. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 19, 2015 at 1:00 PM at the Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Sunnyside, WA. with burial to follow at Lower Valley Memorial Gardens in Sunnyside, WA.
