Hansel, 53, of 1314 Hickory Ave., Wellman, formerly of Solon, passed away in the loving arms of his wife, Rebecca, in his home July 19, 2003, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 24, at Brosh Chapel, Solon, with the Rev. Scott Meador, officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 23, at Brosh Chapel. Military rites will be performed by Solon American Legion Stinocher Post 460. Jack left behind many close dear friends and relatives. Everyone who knew him loved his kind and gentle spirit.... He was a devoted son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. His memory will be cherished by all, including his wife Rebecca ("Becky") Hansel of Wellman; sons, Shane Hansel and grandson Colton Michael Hansel of Vinton, Shannon Hansel and fiancee Brandi of Wellman and Shaun Hansel of Solon; parents, Margaret and Ishmael Hansel of Strawberry Point; brother, Ron Hansel of Anchorage, Alaska; and sister, Dr. Ardith Hansel of Champaign-Urbana, Ill. Jack was born to Ishmael and Margaret (Stern) Hansel on Aug. 29, 1949, in Edgewood, Iowa. He graduated from Edgewood-Colesburg High School in 1967. Jack proudly served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam from 1969-1971 (SP$). He married Rebecca ("Becky") Long Hansel on May 18, 1974, in Marion and they had three sons. Jack and Becky lived in Solon for 25 years and the past five in Wellman. Jack had many years of technical training and had worked at Ream Auto Body in Cedar Rapids for the past 25 years. Jack lived life to its fullest. He possessed a special soul and spirit and an endless energy that allowed him to accomplish many things. Recently, he fulfilled his lifelong dream of creating a wildlife sanctuary and home for family and friends to enjoy. Jack was an avid sportsman who enjoyed a wide array of activities, including woodworking, artistic designs, hunting, fishing, skiing, boating, Ragbrai and Iowa Hawkeye sports.
