A memorial has been established. Donations may be sent to Chamberlain Chapel, PO Box 970, Chadron, Neb. 69337. Jack Rice was born in Pleasanton, on March 30, 1921 to Leon H. and Mabel (Frame) Rice. He graduated from Longfellow High School in Kearney and enlisted in the National Guard in 1940. When WWII was declared, he transferred into the Army Air Corps where he served as a Photoengraver B-17 Pilot. He served in the 612th Bomb Squadron in the 482nd Bomb Group and received two medals: the European African Middle Eastern Service and the Good Conduct Service. After the war, he came home and attended college at Kearney where he met and later married Norma Lee Ocamb. They were married for nearly 60 years. Jack always had a passion for music and was an accomplished trumpet player and played in various dance bands while at Kearney. He graduated from the University of Nebraska with a degree in Agriculture and spent his career working for the U.S.D.A. Soil Conservation Service. He worked in Kimball, Chappell, Chadron and Crawford. He was well respected by farmers and ranchers of western Nebraska for his work on terracing, farm dams and water pipe lines. While in Crawford, Jack was mayor during the town's Centennial Celebration; belonged to the West Nebraska Rock Club; and he enjoyed RV traveling and fishing. He spent countless hours as an RSVP Volunteer and supporting the charities sponsored by the Eagles Club, of which he was a founding member. He is survived by: his daughters Suzanne Swanson and husband Jim of Seattle, Wash., Joyce Castle and husband Larry of Centennial, Colo.; grandchildren Justin Moody and wife Christine, Dawson Moody, and Scott Hunter of Centennial; and by two great-grandchildren: Aaron and Trent Moody. He was preceded in death by his wife Norma Lee, three brothers and his parents. Arrangements have been placed in the care of Chamberlain Chapel of Chadron. The Chadron Record
