Mrs. Delilah Lane and Mr. Jacob Bassinger, two old residents of this place, were the two who were called away, the death of Mrs. Lane occurring Thursday May 27, and that of Mr. Bassinger following on Friday May 28, 1897. Jacob Bassinger was born at Hoppingham, Germany, March 8, 1819. He came to America, slaying in New York until 1845. In that year he came to Iowa, and lived at Muscatine until 1849 when he came to Eddyville, since which time he has made this place his home. In 1850 he was married to Mary Morgan, and four children came to bless the union, as follows: Mrs. Olivia Young, Mrs. Alma Mayer, Mrs. Florence Arnold, and F.E. Bassinger. Mr. Bassinger was a farmer by occupation and by industry and thrift he accumulated a goodly share of this world's goods. Last winter he accepted Christ and joined the Christian church, of which he was a devout and earnest member. Living in this community for a long time he was known to almost everyone and his friends were only numbered by the number of his acquaintances. An illness of some duration finally overcame his strength and on Friday morning he passed away, surrounded by loving relatives and friends. The bereaved relatives have the heartfelt sympathies of all, and may they be comforted by the thought that he was taken away in abeyance to the command of "He who doth all things well." The funeral was held last Sunday at 4 o'clock at the Christian church, the services being in charge of Rev. Ross. The interment was made in the Highland cemetery, and the remains were accompanied to their last resting place by a large concourse of friends. The pall bearers were old friends and companions of the deceased and were all old settlers. We give their names and the dates of their arrival in Iowa. Jesse Palmer age 67, came to Iowa in 1854. D.D. Miller, age 63 came to Iowa in 1845. Phil Dotts age 63, came to Iowa in __, Gervais Fais age 65 came to Iowa in 1855. John Jager, age 57 came to Iowa in 57, F.M. Epperson, age 55, came to Iowa in 1861. Eddyville Tribune, June 4, 1897 Jacob was born as Jacobus Borschinger in Heppenheim Germany. He changed the spelling of his name after relocating to the United States in 1838. After arriving in America Jacob lived in New York for two years living with his brother, Joannes Phililny Borschinger, who had traveled to America before him. He had changed his name to John A. Bersenger. John was a manufacturer of and dealer in fine buggies, and run-about wagons. He did blacksmith work of all kinds and wagon repair. At one time he employed ten experienced men. Jacob worked for a jeweler. In 1845, he traveled by covered wagon to Muscatine, Iowa and was employed there for four years. In 1849, he moved to Eddyville, Iowa where he met his bride Mary Ellen Morgan and they married in 1850. Jacob and Mary Ellen's homestead consisted of 240 acres, one mile east of Eddyville. They lived in a log cabin until their brick home was built in 1868. When homesteading, there were only 12 log cabins of white people and all the others were Indians - more than 2,000 Sac and Fox. During the gold rush, corn was sold for $2.00 a bushel. Jacob used oxen to farm and the corn was planted by hand. The current Eddyville High School, Eddyville, IA, was built on this farm.
