Description	:	Jacob C. Mateer passed away sometime after the 1770 census. By the 1880 census his widow was in Afton, Union County Iowa and a ‘housekeeper’ for John C. Wick. They married after that. Henry Newton Mateer, Jacob’s son, lived in Afton with another brother. Henry’s granddaughters said they had seen a trunk that ‘came from France.’ The story continues that Jacob’s mother was born in England. She liked her toddy. Pa for 1850 census. 1854 they owned 40 acres in Benton County, Iowa (Canton Township). ( A cemetery had to be included… so I put the one in which his son Henry Newton Mateer is buried in. Gravestone for Catherine is also unknown.) Jacob and Catherine’s son, John Ketterman Mateer, wrote the following: History of Audrain County Missouri page 507 J. K. MATEER. Mr. Mateer comes of that old and substantial Pennsylvania-German stock of people, whose industry, thrift and solidity of character have made the Keystone State one of the brightest in the galaxy of the Union. On both sides his parents were of German extraction, but each family has long been settled in this country. J. K. was born in Bedford county, Penn., May 29, 1846. His father was Jacob Mateer. His mother's maiden name was Catherine Wiltz. Both the Mateers and Wiltzes were among the better class of people of Bedford county. When J. K. was about seven years of age, his parents came West and first located at West Ely, in Missouri. A couple of years after- wards, however, they removed to Benton county, Iowa, where J. K. grew to manhood. After growing up in Iowa, Mr. Mateer started out for himself as a farmer, which he followed up to 1871. He then entered a blacksmith shop to learn the trade, at which he worked in Iowa for about two years. In 1873, having been out to Audrain county two years before, he came to Vandalia and followed black- smithing here with success for about ten years. Marriage records show John K. Mateer married down in Ralls Co. Missouri in 1871. 1876, both Henry Newton Mateer and his sister Sarah Jane Mateer married persons living in Ralls Co. Missouri. A family bible supposedly showed that Jacob was at the wedding of John in 1871 but perhaps not at the weddings of 1876.
