Schaefer, 88, retired Chicago & North Western Railway employe, died at 8:23 Wednesday morning at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Fred E. Schaefer, 909 Simon Avenue. Mr. Schaefer, who had been ill the last 18 months, had been bedfast most of the time since fall. The body is at the Huffman Funeral Home, awaiting completion of arrangements. Mr. Schaefer, son of John and Christine Schaefer, was born Sept. 8, 1864, in St. Joseph, Mo. Coming to Carroll in 1870, he had lived here continuously since then with the exception of seven years in South Dakota. For many years, Mr. Schaefer had served as car inspector for the Chicago & North Western railway. After his retirement, he worked for the Farmers Sales company. In his earlier life, he had been a member of the Carroll police force and fire department. Mr. Schaefer was married in Carroll about 61 years ago to Sophia Schilling, who died Aug. 2, 1929. He was also preceded in death by one son, William C. Schaefer, March 12, 1950; one daughter, Mrs. Minnie L. Woodworth, March 12, 1945; one brother, John Schaefer of Omaha, and a sister who died in early childhood. Surviving are four children; 13 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. His sons and daughters are: Fred E. Schaefer, Carroll; Frank G. Schaefer, Sioux Falls, S.D.; Mrs. Bess Rosenquist, Princeton, Illinois; and Mrs. Viola G. Vanderheiden, Las Vegas, Nev. Mr. Schaefer was a member of the Presbyterian Church. He was also a member of a railroad lodge at Boone and the Woodman lodge.
