Diehl, son of Jacob and Nancy Diehl, was born in the state of Ohio on the twentieth day of May, 1843, and departed this life August 20, 1934, at the age of 91 years and three months, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. William Herrick at their farm home near Nelson, Nebraska, where he has made his home for the past eight years. Diehl, son of Jacob and Nancy Diehl, was born in the state of Ohio on the twentieth day of May, 1843, and departed this life August 20, 1934, at the age of 91 years and three months, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. William Herrick at their farm home near Nelson, Nebraska, where he has made his home for the past eight years. Mr. Diehl was united in marriage to Elvira Clark of South Ottawa, Illinois, September 30, 1866. To this union were born three sons: Alfred, Frank and George. This union was broken by the death of Mrs. Diehl October 7, 1875. Mr. Diehl was again united in marriage to Eliza J. Monar of Winchester, Indiana, February 8, 1877. To this union were born three sons and one daughter: Josiah D., Lillie Frances, Jacob, Jr. and Paul. Mr. Diehl obeyed the gospel in 1868 and was baptized and united with the Christian church of which he has been a member ever since. On coming to Nebraska in 1880 and locating in Nuckolls county (sic), he and his wife united by letter with the Ox Bow congregation of the Christian church, then being held in the old Ox Bow school house in the Cook neighborhood, and for thirty-six years they enjoyed their followship and pleasant associations together. The last twenty-five years of their association with them, Mr. Diehl was on the official board as one of the Elders. Mr. Diehl had a great interest in the welfare of the church at large and church attendants. It was a great pleasure for him to join the assembly on the Lord's day for worship and when his health permitted he was seldom absent. Mr. Diehl was a strong advocate of the restoration of primitive Christianity as taught and practiced by the Apostles and early Christians and in the last century plead by Alexander Campbell and those associated with him. Mr. Diehl gave liberally and cheerfully of his means for the support of the primitive gospel. Mr. Diehl was a good, kind and peaceful citizen, one who loved his neighbor as himself, doing no one any harm. He leaves to mourn his death six sons Alfred of Oscealaa (sic), Iowa; Frank of Fosston, Colorado; George of Akron, Ohio; Joe of Nelson; Jake of Fosston, Colorado; Paul of Osceola, Iowa; and one daughter, Lillie of Nelson; fifteen grand children, and ten great grand children. "Sleep on dear father, And take they rest; God called thee home, He thought it best." Funeral services were held at the Christian church (sic) in Nelson, Wednesday afternoon with 2:30, with Rev. C.R. Brooks officiating. Mr. Diehl moved with his family to Nebraska in 1880, located in Nuckolls county (sic) and purchased the N.W. 1/4 of Section 31, in Sherman precinct, broke it out and partly improved it. It is now the home of Frank Ruttman. Four years later he sold it and purchased the N.W. 1/4 of Section 2, in Nelson precinct, three and a half miles north of Nelson; improved it and made it his home for 34 yearss (sic) and then sold it to the present occupant and owner, D.M. Holsteen. Mr. Diehl took quite an interest in the development and improvement of Nuckollss (sic) county (sic). He served in an official capacity as county commissioner for two terms from the 3rd district, from 1890 to 1896 inclusive. He served for several years as a member of the Soldier's Relief Commission of Nuckolls county (sic). He served 30 years in succession as a member of the school board in Bethel district No. 27, north of Nelson. Mr. Diehl enlisted as o (sic) Union defender and served in the Civil War. He enlisted on the 25th of July, 1862, at the age of 19 years in Company G 104th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, for three years or during the war. He gave nearly three years of hard and arduous service for the preservation of our glorious union, that we might have one country and one flag. Mr. Diehl particiapted in quite a number of the prominent battles of the war, such as Chickamauga, Lookout Mountain, Missionary Ridge, and the battles of Hartsville and Elk River in Tennessee. He was promoted from a private to the rank of Corporal for meritorious conduct. The last year of the war Mr. Diehl was with Sherman in his campaigns and participated in the battles of that army till the close of the war. He was in the Atlanta campaign and in the battles around Atlanta, Peach Tree, Utah Creek and Jonesbury which terminated in the downfall and surrender of Atlanta on the 3rd day of September, 1864. He was with Sherman in his historic march from Atlanta to the sea. He was present at the surrender and occupation of Savanah on Christmas day, 1864. He went with Sherman on his northern campaign from Savanah through the Carolinas in the months of January, February and March, 1865, to join Grant and end the war, but before they got through, Gen. Joe Johnson commanding the Confederate forces in North Carolina, deployed his army across Sherman's path at Bentonville on the 18th day of March 1865. This resulted in a hard fought battle, lasting a part of two days in which Johnson was defeated and retreated north of Smithfield, 30 miles northwest of Raleigh, where a few weeks later, on the 26th day of April, 1865, Johnson surrendered his army to Sherman and the war was practically over. Sherman than marched his army to Washington City to take part in the last drama of the war, the grand review of the army of the Potomac and Sherman's army by President Johnson and other prominent officials, on the 23rd and 24th days of May, 1865. Thus the curtain drops closing the scenes of the long and bloody war of four years duration in which the Union was saved and Old Glory floats as the only banner, recognized and honored by all nations. Sherman's army was then mustered out of the service and forever disbanded as a military organization. Mr. Diehl as one of this army was mustered out of the service on the 6th day of June, 1865, at the age of 22 years. He then returned to his home in Illinois and took up his former occupation, farming, and carried on that occupation during the remainder of his active life, until a few years ago when he retired therefrom January 7th, 1928.
