Read More	Jacob Held Family New Salem 1883-1983; Pages 314-315 Jacob Frederick Held was one of the many immigrants to come to the New Salem area. He was born in Bergerhausen bei Bibrach-Wuerttenberg area of Germany. He was an apprentice to a miller. In April of 1884, after serving his term in the German army he left his sweetheart and family to come to America. For a brief time he lived in LaPort, Indiana with his uncle, Matthew Held. He then moved to Chicago, Illinois where he lived with a friend named Flecher (some spell it Fletcher). While in Chicago he worked at a bakery, and it was here that he met a man named Techmeier (some spell it Tegtmeyer), who was from New Salem. Techmeier had taken up a land claim at New Salem and was willing to sell his so called rights. It was in 1883 that Jacob bought the homestead and in June of 1884 he moved to North Dakota and filed a claim on that land. The land Jacob bought is north of New Salem, it had its advantages, it was close to the settlement of New Salem, was good farm land and it had a shack on it that could be used as a home. When Jacob was settled he sent for his fiancee, Babette Schwartzenbach, whom he had left back in Germany. She was born in Germany on July 12, 1860. Pioneer life was very difficult and they saw many hard times together. At one time a fire started by a railroad engine burned both their home and crops. Three children were born to this marriage: Frederick Christian George Held, born June 18, 1887; Caroline Christine (Tina) Held, born April 22, 1889; and John Jacob Held, born January 9, 1891. On June 11, 1892 Babette died in childbirth with the child and she was buried at the Peace Church Cemetery. One of Jacobs good friends, Johann Bopp who had also come from Germany earlier to take up a homestead had writtern to his brothers, George and Fred Bopp in Germany and told them to come to America, there was free land available next to his. They were to bring along their sister, Katherine, because New Salem needed a dressmaker. It was in 1893 that all three arrived in New Salem. Katherine Charlotte Bopp was born June 15, 1873 in Bergerhausen, Germany. Jacob needed a housekeeper and someone to take care of his children and he hired Katherine, who was then 19, to take on the responsibility. She had a hard time doing this as she was trained to be a seamstress and had never prepared a full meal and things were so different in this wild country. Somehow they made out and on June 10, 1893 Jacob and Katherine were married. They had 4 children: Jacob Fred Held, born April 24, 1894; Adelaide Louise Held, born September 24, 1895; Carl Held, born October 28, 1897; and Henry George Held, born July 4, 1903. By this time Katherine had become an excellent cook, a good farm wife, and was an excellent mother to both her own and her step-children. They were never aware that they were anything but full brothers and sisters. Finding that they were unable to obtain more land adjacent to their present homestead, Jacob moved his family 12 miles south of New Salem in 1896 where he bought a section of land from the railroad. They built a sod house and barn on the northeast corner of the land, the problem here was no water could be found. There was a quarter section to the east that had ample water and this was unclaimed land, but since Jacob already proved up a homestead he was not eligible to take up another homestead claim. They used this water supply for their cattle and etc. and when a man named Robinson bought the land they made arrangements with him to keep using it. Disputes developed and a new house and barn were built about a mile to the southeast, but still no water to be found. In 1904 Robinson had proved his claim and was ready to sell but for what was thought to be a high price of $10.00 an acre. Jacob paid $2.75 an acre for the land that he owned. Jacob knew the place had ample water and Robinson had built a house on it that was made of railroad ties and it had other buildings so Jacob bought it. In 1906 a nice modern home was built with a furnace and part bath. The Marvin Held family now live in that house. In 1910 a large modern barn was added, making the farm a show place. Jacob was a progressive farmer, raising small grains, good horses, and thoroughbred cattle. They milked cows and when they went to town they would sell butter and eggs. Sunday was always a day of rest for Jacob and his family, even the work horses got a day of rest as there were always buggy and riding horses for Sunday use. With all the work, they found it difficult to travel the distance by horse and buggy to New Salem for church on Sundays, especially during the winter. So Jacob got together with some of his neighbors and started Bethel Evangelical Church. There were twenty-one families in the area who met to organize the congregation on June 6, 1908. Jacob served as the church's second president. The whole family was active in church work. Katherine was also the area midwife. Many mornings the children would get up and find a note on the table. Someone had come during the night and she was needed to help deliver a baby. So the family had to get there own breakfast. For awhile the schoolhouse was across the road, so Jacob Held's was the logical place for schoolteachers to stay. All types of people stopped at Held's. Sometimes a traveling salesman would spend the night and Gypsies would camp along the road not far from the house, getting their water from the spring by the house. In 1912 they had a good crop, all debts were paid and there was money in the bank. However Jacob was not to enjoy it for very long. He had been having hernia trouble and in 1913 he went to Chicago, where his nephew, Adolph Held was an intern at one of the hospitals, to have it repaired. At that time very few doctors or hospitals in the area did surgery. While Jacob was in the hospital, trombosis developed and he died on Febuary 21, 1913. His body was brought back home and was buried at the Bethel Cemetery. Katherine then with the help of her two older sons, Fred then 18, and Carl then 15, took over the management of the farm. Christine (Tina) also stayed home and helped until 1914 when she married Chris Bahr. Adelaide also was at home till 1920 when she married Ed Schwartz. In 1919 Fred and Carl purchased the farm from Katherine and she kept house for them until 1927 when Fred and Ruth Wullschleger were married. Katherine then moved into New Salem in a house she had built in 1926. Carl continued to live with Fred and Ruth until 1930 when he married Evelyn Bethke. Katherine enjoyed an active life in New Salem, taking an interest in activities of the Peace Church located one block from her home. After a lingering illness she died September 20, 1943 and she was laid to rest beside her husband, Jacob, in the Bethel Cemetery, eight miles southeast of New Salem.
