Read More	J.F.Ruhlen, 88 Died Wednesday Funeral To Be Friday One of Baldwin's Oldest Citizens Passes After Short Ilness Following Stroke Death claimed one of Baldwin's oldest citizens when J.F. Ruhlen, 88, passed away at his home on Wednesday morning. He had been ill less than a week, having suffered a stroke last week. Funeral services will be held Friday morning at ten o'clock in the Chapel of the First M.E.Church. Mr. Ruhlen was the last of a large family which came from Germany and settled near New California, Ohio in 1853, when he was but four years of age. He was born in Wurtenberg, Germany, on February 13, 1849. On April 16, 1876, he was united in marriage to Lydia Clevenger. Shortly after the marriage, they moved to Kansas and settled near Wetmore. Mrs. Ruhlen passed away on January 8, 1908. On February 24, 1910, he was united in marriage to Bertha Johnston of Iowa. The Ruhlens came to this community in 1912 that they might be of assistance in the college education of the two younger children and have lived here since that time. Mr. Ruhlen had an abundance of friends in the community. He was an interesting personality and had the ability to recall incidents of history concerning the life of the nation during his life time. He was seventeen years of age when Lincoln was assassinated and he had the privilege of seeing this great man as he lay in his coffin. He was a man of strong convictions but so honest and sincere that he won the respect even of those who disagreed with him. He had an intense interest in everything pertaining to the community life and one of his last acts was to ask his son-in-law to take him to see the soldiers when they were encamped in East Park. He was always in attendance and an ardent booster of The Santa Fe Trail picnics and he was especially interested in the display of antiques at the last picnic. He contributed an army sword to the display. J.F. Ruhlen will be missed by a host of friends in Baldwin. The immediate survivors besides Mrs. Ruhlen are: L.L. Ruhlen of Yuma, Arizona; Mrs. Nettie Cooley, Elk Grove, Calif.; Rev. C.L. Ruhlen, Moline Kansas; and Mrs. Edna Frazer of Baldwin.
