Gottlieb married Johanna Thiermann on 30 August 1894 in Carroll, Carroll County, IA. They were the parents of Arnold, Carl, and Lillian. Carls mother, Elizabeth Schilling, was living with him in 1900. Jan 21, 1901 - Carroll Times - The old adage, that "death comes like a thief at night," was forcibly impressed upon the minds of our citizens last Thursday evening, when the announcement of the sudden death of Gottlieb Kreig was made public. Deceased was an old-time and well known citizen of Carroll and none of his associates were aware of his illness, which was of short duration. About 10 o'clock Thursday forenoon Mr. Krieg complained of not feeling well and went to his home in the Third Ward. He remained in bed during the day and seemed to be resting quietly. About 4 o'clock in the afternoon Mrs. Kreig asked the sick man if he desired anything to eat. Being advised in the affirmative, she went to the kitchen, prepared food, and on returning to her husband's bedside was astounded to find that he had died during her brief absence. Deceased was one of the pioneer residents of this city, having settled here in the seventies. An interesting and pathetic history surrrounds the life of deceased and while it would be of unusal interest, it is best perhaps to remain untold. Besides a daughter, residing in Wyoming, deceased leaves a widow and three children, also a brother, Fred Kreig of Breda, to mourn his death. He was a member of the order of Modern Woodmen and carried $1,000 life insurance. He was 49 years of age. The funeral took plaoe Sunday afternoon under the auspices of the Woodmen and Turu-Verein societies. Rev. A.H. Dent, of the Baptist church, preaching an appropriate and thoughtful sermon over the remains of the deceased.
