Burkhart From The Woodward Enterprise, Woodward, Iowa, December 29, 1932 Jacob Burkhart Buried Thursday - born in Pennsylvania- he had been a resident of Peoples Township seventy-one years. The death of Jacob Burkhart, mention of which was made in last week's Enterprise, has taken another of Peoples Township's oldest citizens. Jacob Burkhart was born in Butler County, Pennsylvania, on July 14, 1844. He passed away on December 19, 1932, being 88 years, 5 months, and 5 days old at the time of his death. He came with his parents to Iowa City, Iowa, in l854 and has resided in Iowa continuously for 74 years. He moved to Des Moines, Iowa, in l857 where the family lived until l861 when he moved to Peoples Township. He lived here from that date to the time of his death, or for the past 71 years. He was married to Sara Jane Guthrie on April 7, 1868. To this union were born three children. The first wife died May 29, 1872. Mr. Burkhart was married again to Florence Emogene Miller on March 31, 1874. To this union were born nine children. Jacob Burkhart was converted and joined the Methodist church when he was twenty years old. He remained a member of the Methodist church to the day of his death. For over 68 years he served the church as a faithful member, steward or trustee, and when declining health precluded his regular attendance at church services he was always mindful of his church vows and religious responsibilities. He was a successful farmer and business man, a faithful husband and father, an ideal neighbor and a patriotic citizen of the commonwealth. He is survived by seven children, Harvey W., Josiah H., Mrs. L.L. (Viola Elizabeth) Davisson, Mrs. Della Bice (Celia) and Mrs. C.E. Bice (Mldred) of Peoples township, Boone County, Mrs. E.M. Wernli (Charlotte) of Yale, Iowa, and Mrs. Fannie Kline of Harrison, Arkansas. Also surviving are 49 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, two sisters - Mrs. Margaret Hinds of Des Moines and Mrs. Marla Jones of Rapid City, S.D. - and numerous other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, who passed away exactly eight months before, and also by two sons and three daughters. Father Burkhart was a man of sterling qualities and deep convictions, whose faith in God and the Bible was ever steadfast. During the closing months of his life he seemed to forget earth's toils and cares, and looked forward to the joyful meeting of loved ones gone before. The funeral services were held at the People's Baptist Church on last Thursday, December 22, in charge of the Rev. F.A. Smith, his pastor, who spoke from the text Psalms 37:37. A quartet composed of Mrs. William Cooper, William Wade, and O.C. Miller sang "Safe in the Arms of Jesus," "Wonderful Peace" and "Rock of Ages." Miss Patience Lewiston presided at the piano. The pall bearers were A.A., A.E., Austin, D.L., Raymond, and Otha Burkhart. Burial was in the Peoples Township Cemetery beside the side of his faithful wife.
