C. Helber and the Carleton children, Winifred and Buddy. They had stopped at Ironton for the evening and resumed their drive, expecting to return by way of Fredericktown. When they reached the new bridge being created over Stouts Creek, they got out of the car to inspect the detour around the bridge and while doing so Mr Helber sustained an attack of heart trouble. He was taken back to Ironton as quickly as possible and given medical attention by Dr. Gay. His condition rapidly grew worse and the end came peacefully a short while afterward. Funeral services were held at the First M.E. Church at 2:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon by the pastor, Rev E.C. Wadlow. Music was furnished by a quartet. Six nephews served as pallbearers while six other long time friends and local business men of town were honorary pallbearers. Interment was in the Helber Holler lot in Masonic Cem. Jacob Helber was born in Greenville, OH on June 9, 1850, being aged 78 years, 9 months and 15 days at the time of death. He was the son of Christian and Catherine Pretzinger Helber. He came with his parents to Farmington when but three years of age and for more then 75 years continued to reside here. For 47 years of this time he was owner of the Helber Hardware store which he sold to his nephew Earl Carleton about six years ago, retiring at that time from active business. During all these years he was noted for his courteous square dealing and his patrons were to be found in every part of this and adjoining counties. He early joined the Methodist church and for great many years was an official member of the church. He was a kindly man making friends readily and holding them steadily. In 1873 he was united in marriage to Miss Emma Carleton of South Bend, IN. She preceded him in death eight years. To them one daughter was born Mae. He also reared a nephew Earl Carleton. He is survived by the daughter, Mrs. E.C. Holler, one sister, Mrs Emma Bodwell of Farmington; one brother J.W. Helber of Bonne Terre, many nephews and nieces, also several grand nephews and grand nieces. All these have lost a loved one who was ever interested keenly for their welfare and who in return was greatly beloved by them. The community has lost one it its best citizens and one whose kindly personalty will be greatly missed. Out of respect for the pleasant associations which had extended over many years local business houses were closed during the hour of the funeral service.
