George Daniel Speer Sr. "THE HEYDE FAMILY (HEYD and HYDE) "John George Heyde the earliest known ancestor of this family was born in Alsace, France about the year 1770. He was a wagon maker by trade, and followed this occupation in his native village making wagons and gun carriages for the French army. His family consisted of three sons and two daughters. Nothing authentic can be learned of the daughters. However of the three sons the two younger went north in early manhood and probably joined the German army and have never been heard of since. "The oldest son Jacob Henry Heyde is the only member of this family of which we have any reliable information. He was born in the province of Alsace, France, in the year 1793. In his youth he learned the wagon makers trade under his father and remained with him until the age of twenty when he entered the French army under Napoleon where he served with distinction until the downfall of Napoleon. After his term of enlistment be returned to his former occupation. In 1821 he was married to Mary Elisabeth Merkling. To this union was born eight children. Catharine, Fredrick, Mary, Elisabeth, Jacob, Philip Henry, Magdalene and Caroline. "In 1828 he immigrated to America, landing in New York in the fall of that year. They came to Wooster, Ohio by way of Buffalo and Cleveland and bought a farm south of Wooster, Ohio, which is now part of the Ohio Experiment Station Farm. Here they lived for three years, then disposing of his farm he removed his family to Ashland County, Ohio, settling on a farm five miles south of Loudonville. Here he built a log house in the woods for his family. "In early youth he was confirmed in the Faith of the Lutheran Church, (the church of his ancestors) and remained faithful all his life. After providing for the comforts of his family the next thing necessary was to provide a place of worship. He assembled a few of his neighbors, organized a congregation and by the following Spring had built a log church on his farm, and this without the expenditure of a dollar in money. This was in 1836 and was probably the first Lutheran Church in Ashland County. This congregation grew and became on of the most useful institutions in all that section for spreading the Gospel among the people. It remained active for more than fifty years after which its members affiliated with a neighboring congregation. Jacob Henry died in 1867 and his wife Mary died in 1880 and both were buried in the old church yard on their farm....
