Fetterhoff had a record of a life of great usefulness, and of marked influence for good in the lives of those with whom he came in contact. He was born to Jacob and Catherine (Forney) Fetterhoff, both of whom were natives of the Keystone state. The father died when his son Jacob was but 8yrs. old. The mother afterward married again and spent her last days in Maryland. Jacob was the 2nd in a family of three sons but his brothers, Hiram and Albert H., are both deceased. He resided with his widowed mother until after the outbreak of the Civil War. In September, 1862, he offered his services to the government, becoming a private of Co. H., 16th Pennsylvania Cavalry. He was promoted to sergeant and served for 32 months, being honorably discharged at the close of the war. He was wounded and while at the front suffered from typhoid malaria. Twice he was in hospital but as soon as possible rejoined his regiment. In Feb. 1863, he was granted a furlough and for a short time was at home. He took part in over 30 engagements with the Army of the Potomac and made a most creditable military record. He did not hesitate to take his place on the lonely picket line nor stand upon the firing line where the battle raged the thickest. Jacob was married at Franklin Grove, Illinois, in Oct. 1865, to Melvina Catherine Cook. They came to Nevada, Iowa in 1866, and purchased a farm of 183 acres, 4 miles south of town. Their marriage was blessed with five children. Jacob had become a well-to-do citizen at the time of his death. He joined the Methodist Episcopal church and became an evangelist and engaged in preaching for about four years prior to his death, being in the midst of a meeting when called to his final home.
