Medical assistance was phoned for but no relief could be given and he died shortly after being stricken. Mr. Smouse was a welltodo farmer. In 1897 he bought a part of the present homestead in Union township, Carroll county, adding to his acres from time to time. Previous to his settlement on his home place he was for several years a renter in Audubon and Guthrie counties, thus being one among the oldest settlers in the community. He was born in Jefferson county, Pennsylvania, May 3, 1860, being 54 years of age at His death. He was a prominent member of Charity lodge, A.F. & A . M., also of Copestone Chapter, Carroll. He was for a number of terms school director and road commissioner, being an active democrat. Sunday afternoon the funeral services were conducted by Rev. Brown in the town park and which were largely attended, the Masonic lodge bearing the remains and also conducting ritualistic service at the cemetery, assisted by the Night Templar lodge of Carroll, a large number, of members attending in uniform, making a very imposing appearance. The deceased was a respected citizen, always of splendid habits, a good neighbor and devoted husband and father. The stricken family have the deep sympathy of the community in their sorrow. He was married to Miss Sarah Catherine Nedrow in 1886, twelve children being born to them, Don, Dicy, George, Harriett, Lott, Druella, Eve, Ralph, Alice and Miles, Verneeda and Anna dying in in fancy. Besides his wife and children he leaves to mourn his death two grandchildren—Jacob and Jessie Smouse. Also four brothers and three sisters—Peter, Aaron, Samuel and Arch Smouse, and Mrs. Louis Samago, Mrs. Robert Mains and Mrs. Frank Enning. Relatives who come from a distance to attend the funeral were—Mr. and Mrs. Louis Samago and family, Mr. and Mrs. Pete Smouse and family, Mr. and Mrs. Humprey Anderson and son, Mr. and Mrs. Wilber Anderson and daughter, Mr. J. Kessreling and son, John, Mr. and Joe Coffman and family, Mr. and Mrs Grant Timons, all of Wichita, Iowa. Mr. and Mrs. R. D. Mains and Arch Smouse of Council Bluffs, Mr. and Mrs. U. P. Nedrow and Mr. M. S. Nedrow and A. P. Carpenter of Harrington, Nebraska, and Mr. and Mrs. Bert Carpenter, Mr. and Mrs. Maynard Titterington and Len Fellows of Milford, Iowa.
