Mr. Weis was born in Burmeinger, Luxemburg, August 12, 1851. He came to America with his parents when twelve years old, the family settling at Henry, Ill. In 1871 the Weis family came from Illinois to Fillmore County, Nebraska, in a covered wagon, crossing the Missouri river at Plattsmouth by ferry, the father taking a homestead in Momence Township. They took the covered wagon box from the gears and made a temporary home of it until other quarters could be provided. Fillmore County was a very new country in 1871. March 25, 1881, Jacob Weis was married to Miss Clara Sampont, who had come to this county from Port Washington, Wis. Mr. and Mrs. Weis always took an active part in the affairs of the community. They were active part in the affairs of the community. They were active members and supporters of the Turkey Creek Catholic Church during their residence on their farm. Since the family's removal to Geneva, Mr. Weis has been active in the service and support of St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Mr. Weis served ten years as assessor of Momence township. He was elected county treasurer in 1898 and he and his family moved to Geneva at that time. They have resided in Geneva continuously since that time. Mr. Weis served as county treasurer four years, the maximum permitted by law, and he has also served the city as councilman. Mr. Weis completed his valuable public service by serving for twenty years as president of the Fillmore County Agricultural Society from 1908 to 1928. He was then chosen vice president and continued in that office until his death. The Fillmore county fair has always occupied a prominent place among the county fairs of the state. Its marked success has been due to the intelligent and painstaking efforts of many citizens. Mr. Weis contributed much to the history and achievements of the Fillmore County Agricultural Society during the twenty years he served it as president. For a number of years, Mr. Weis was in the real estate and insurance business, being a member of the firm of Page, Putlitz & Weis. His judgment as to land values was highly considered and he was often consulted by those considering buying land. He took an active interest in Democratic politics, serving his party as county chairman and in other capacities. The Weis home was blessed with six children: Mrs. Glen Carson of Eldora, Ia.; Mrs. Fred Kenney of Wauneta; Mrs. Agnes Baroch of Harlan, Ia.; Walter and Florence Weis of Geneva, and Reno Weis of Stromsburg. Mr. Weis is also survived by his wife and by seven grandchildren; also by one brother, Peter Weis of Geneva. The funeral service was conducted at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Geneva at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 9, Monsignor P.J. Healy officiating. Mrs. A. H. Elder impressively sang, "Lead Kindly Light." Beautiful floral tokens bore witness to the loving sympathy of many friends. Interment was in the Geneva Catholic Cemetery. The active pallbearers were: Thomas J. Keenan, Ed McCluskey, Carl Schneider, Ben Koehler, Lester Kenney and Guy Case. The following citizens who served with Mr. Weis on the county fair board acted as honorary pallbearers: Dr. I. W. McEachran, B. B. Ogg, S. E. Ralsten, Henry Muhlenburg, Fred. H. Camp, Charles F. Buehrer. Members of the present county fair board were in attendance. The Nebraska Signal July 1935
