They were divorced Jul 1902. ____ Newspaper Clipping Clay Center, KS Tuesday Evening, July 10, 1945 OBITUARIES SMITH The last chapter in the life of Jacob Wesley Smith, 81, has been written since he passed away Monday, June 25th at the General hospital in Denver, Colo. Mr. Smith had been in failing health since October, 1944, and in February of 1945, he suffered a broken hip, which confined him to the hospital for some time. He was recovering nicely and was happy to be at home with his daughter, Miss Maude Smith, at Englewood. However complications developed which made it necessary for him to return to the hospital, where his death occurred. Life began for Jacob Wesley Smith, son of James and Rachel Smith, February 27, 1864, in Fulton county, Illinois, and he grew to manhood there. The marriage of Mr. Smith and Miss Ollie Blanche Criswell of Landon [sic], Kansas, took place December 25, 1889, at the Criswell home. Mr. and Mrs. Smith went back to Ellisville, Ill., where they lived a few months, then went to Blaine, Wash. It was there that their son, Harry, was born in 1892, and in the same year they returned to their old home in Illinois, remaining there until 1898. The daughter Maude was born at Ellisville. During the year 1902, Mr. Smith's wife and his father died. The Smith family moved to Wichita. In 1903 Mr. Smith, his two children and his mother established their home at White City. In 1918 they came to Clay Center where the family home was at 515 Maple street, until they went to Colorado in 1929. Mr. Smith returned to Clay Center several times and was looking forward to a visit here this summer. In his active years Mr. Smith was employed with the Union Pacific railway company, and later with Swift & Co. He had long been a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and lived up to their precepts. Although he did not enter much into public life, he was always known as a devoted father, and a good citizen. More than anything else Mr. Smith enjoyed the companionship of his children and grandchildren, who were thoughtful of him, especially in his declining years. He was the last of his family. Surviving relatives include his son and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Smith, his daughter, Miss Maude Smith of Englewood, Calif. [sic], a grandson, Donald Smith, S3/C US Coast Guard, and wife; a granddaughter, Mrs. Donald Erickson and Mr. Erickson; and a great grandson, Richard Ray Erickson, of Leonardville. Funeral services were held at Englewood, Thursday, June 28th, and final rites were conducted at the Peterson-Neill Chapel in Clay Center, Saturday afternoon, June 30 at 2 o'clock by the Rev. Ernest A. Hull of the First Methodist church. Mrs. Walter Obenland, Mrs. Wilber Neill, Loren Law and Alfred Humfeld, with Miss Ila Fish as accompanist, sang "The Old Rugged Cross," "Sweetly Resting" and Mr. Humfeld sang as a solo "Going Home." Burial was made in the Smith family plot at Greenwood. The body bearers were Will Hartman, James Stevens, Ernest Heinen, John Ferguson, W. W. Foltz and Guy Gordon. The I. O. O. F. lodge held ritualistic committal rites honoring the memory of a departed brother.
