One child was born to their union. ____ Clay Center Times Clay Center, KS Thursday, October 22, 1925 DEATHS Smith: - Mrs. Rachel Smith passed to her eternal reward Saturday evening, October 17, at her home, 507 Maple street. She had been in failing health for some time but of late had been better and death came rather suddenly. Mrs. Smith had been a resident of Clay Center for about seven years, coming here to be with her son, J. W. Smith, and grandchildren, Harry and Miss Maude Smith. She was a quiet, home-loving lady, and in the later years of her life did not get out much, but those who have known her appreciated her goodness. Rachel Black was born in Hancock county, Indiana, September 11, 1844. Her mother died when she was four years of age and she was taken to Fulton county, Illinois, where she was adopted by Mr. and Mrs. Marke with whom she lived until her marriage with James R. Smith in the fall of 1862. To them, one son was born, Jacob Wesley Smith. The family moved to Parsons, Kansas, in the fall of 1878 but returned to Illinois the next spring. Ten years later they moved to Wichita, Kansas, where Mr. Smith died in 1902. She came to Clay Center in 1918 and this has been her home since. Here she passed away on Saturday, October 17th, after a brief illness of only three days at the ripe age of 81 years, 1 month and 6 days. She was a member of the Methodist church from early life and so long as her physical strength permitted, was active in the work of the church, having served as Sunday school superintendent and steward as well as having filled other offices in the church. She leaves her son, J. W. Smith, two grand children, Harry and Maude Smith, whose mother having died when they were small children, she took into her home and heart and has always been a mother to them. She also leaves two great grand children, Donny and Rachel Smith and their mother, Mrs. Harry Smith, all of Clay Center. She lived her religion in her home every day, and her children rise up and call her blessed. She died with a firm faith in God, and without any fear went out into eternity to meet her Savior. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the First M. E. church, conducted by Rev. E. H. Knepp, the pastor. Appropriate music was furnished by Mrs. F. W. A. Paul and Mrs. Arlen Taylor. Interment took place in Greenwood cemetery.
