Here stands the village of Hightown, the site of one of the earliest settlements in the valley. Among the many interesting things in the Crabbottom Valley, there stands on the divide between the headwaters of he James and Potomac an old store building that is in a very real sense a symbol of the sterling traits of character of the pioneer, Jacob Hevener, who came into what is now known as Crabbottom Valley prior to 1800. This sturdy settler came with his axe on his back and after settling upon and clearing a portion of the farm still owned by his descendants, some time prior to 1820 he erected a store building on the site just across the road from the present post office of Hightown. This was a log building. In it Jacob Hevener, his son, Jacob Hevener Jr., and grandson, George Washington Hevener, sold merchandise hauled by wagon from Richmond. A great-grandson, Jacob W. Hevener, continued the mercantile business in the same building until 1924. In the meantime the building was weather boarded. It is today in a good state of preservation, though no longer used for a store. In 1924 Richard W. Hevener, great-great-grandson, became the owner of the mercantile business, and erected a new building across the road, and moved out of the original store building, after it had thus been in continous occupancy for more than one hundred years. The present owner is the fifth generation of the Hevener family to engage in the mercantile and farming industries on the site of the first Hevener settlement in Highland. The Hevener farm is one of the best stock raising farms in Highland, and for many years, under the ownership of Jacob W. Hevener. Highland Recorder October 7, 1949 JACOB W. HEVENER DIES AT HIGHTOWN On Tuesday morning Oct. 4th, at his home at Hightown, in the beautiful, “blue grass valley” that he had known and loved throughout his long, happy and useful life, all that was mortal of Jacob W. Hevener, passed away peacefully. But the spirit which had given life to the body took flight to the “Home Over there”—whose foundation was laid and upheld by simple child-like faith, absolute and undeviating trust which only could be interpreted: “I know in whom. I have believed.” Mr. Hevener had reached the ripe age of 86 years—years filled with purposeful ambition, constructive co-operation and an upright example to his fellowmen. He was both a successful and honorable business man and, therefore held in the highest esteem by people of every walk in life—the high, the learned and the lowly. Mr Hevener was a large land owner, live stockman, farmer, banker, former County Supervisor and faithful churchman. At the time of his demise he was President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of The First and Citizens Bank and Trust Co. For about ten years he gave liberally of his time and sound, financial judgment to make the above institution one of the foremost banks in this section of Virginia. Mr Hevener was a ruling elder in the Pisgah Presbyterian Church which, at all times, received his financial and spiritual support. Mr. Hevener was a son of George Washington Hevener and Mary C. Sommers Hevener, He married Ratie M. Fleisher, of Highland County, by whom he is survived, also two sons, Richard W. Hevener, Treasurer of Highland County, Summers Hevener, a business man, of Newark, N.J. and two daughters, Mrs. John Stephenson, of Meadow Dale and Mrs. Paul Buckles, of Newport News. The funeral service was held from the home of the deceased, conducted by his pastor, the Rev. A. E. Johnson, with internment in the Monterey cemetery. J. W. HEVENER Jacob William Hevener, 86, prominent stockman and farmer of Highland, died Tuesday morning, October 4, at his home at Hightown. He had been in declining health for more than a year Mr. Hevener was born April 24, 1863, in Highland County. He was reared and lived all his life at the Hevener homestead at Hightown where for seven generations his ancestors and direct descendants hare lived, he being the fourth generation He was the only son of George Washington Hevener and Mary Catherine (Sommers) Hevener. He attended Augusta Military Academy and until his death was the oldest living alumnus of the Academy. He married Miss Rachel Margaret Fleisher, June 8, 1892, who survives him in addition to two sons, Richard W. Hevener at home, Sommers F. Hevener of Newark, N.J., and two daughters, Mrs. Paul K. Buckles, of Newport News, and Mrs. John H. Stephenson, living at Meadowdale, the old homeplace of Mrs. Hevener, nine grandchildren and five great grand children survive; also one sister, Mrs. George D. Dudley, Hightown. Another sister, Mrs Charles Brock, died a number of years ago. Remarkably active prior to the months of his illness, interested and concerned with present day events, Mr. Hevener took pride in stocking his Blue Grass grazing farm with some of the County’s prize cattle. He was a director and one of the moving spirits in the Highland County Stock Show during it’s life in the County. He was also a stockholder in the County’s newest enterprise, The Highland County Livestock Market, Inc. In his early life he was associated with his father in a mercantile business established by his great-grandfather in the days when merchandise was hauled by wagon and team from Richmond, and which was located on the site of the present post-office building at Hightown. He was a charter member and director of the Citizens Bank of Highland, now the First & Citizens Bank & Trust Co., of which he was President and Chairman of the Board at the time of his death. He assisted in the organization and erection of the first Mutual Telephone system in the County, and was a director and Treasurer of the Monterey Mutual Switchboard Company for a number of years. In 1916 he was elected from Blue Grass District to the Highland County Board of Supervisors where he served for sixteen years and was Chairman of the Board most of that period. It was during his regime on the Board that much, of the county road system was improved, the roads rocked and graveled and the travelers taken out of the mud. He was always vitally interested in the whole program of the County and gave his unlimited time and energy to it’s development and welfare. Although in failing health and unable to see the completed building, he was deeply interested in the building program of the new courthouse and anxious that it be erected in his lifetime so that he could share in the rebuilding of the governmental seat of his County. One of the oldest members of Pisgah Presbyterian Church, Mr. Hevener served his church as a ruling elder for many years. He had the honor at one time of representing his Presbytery as Commissioner to the General Assembly at Montreat. Outstanding in life, respected and loved, Mr. Hevener's death marks the close of a life of service and usefulness, warm hospitality and love of home, won for him a host of lifelong friends, a loyal and devoted family. Obituary for George W. Hevener Death of Prominent Man Mr. George Washington Hevener one of the oldest, most respected and useful citizens of the county died at his home at Hightown, Thursday afternoon, January 10th, 1918, after an illness of a few weeks. He was born December 18th, 1831, being at the time of his death eighty-six years and twenty-two days old. On December 26th, 1859 he was married to Miss Mary Catharine Sommers who died February 24th, 1915 in her seventy-ninth year. Of them three children were born: Mrs. Elizabeth Catharine Brock, Mrs. George D. Dudley and Mr. Jacob W. Hevener, of whom the last two survive. The deceased was a son of the late Jacob Hevener and the last surviving member of his family. He was born and reared at the place where the Grim Reaper found him, and during his long life was engaged largely in farming and stock raising, in which pursuits he was eminently successful. Mr. Hevener was a Confederate Veteran, a member of Company E of the Thirty-first Virginia Regiment. Soon after the war while yet a comparatively young man he united with the Presbyterian Church at Pisgah in which he was for years one of the Deacons and for the last twenty- five years of his life an honored Ruling Elder. His nature and life were quiet, kindly and unobtrusive and the vacancy caused by his going will be deeply felt in the many hearts where he still lives, in the community and in the church. After funeral services in the home conducted by his pastor, the Rev. N. A. Parker, assisted by the Rev. J. T. Adkins, of Durbin, his remains were laid to rest in the family burying ground near the home on Saturday, January 12th. Highland Recorder January 26, 1895 Mr. L. A. Orndorff who has full control of G. W. Hevener’s store at Hightown for a couple of years has resigned and is now a guest at the Hidy House, where he will remain before entering business.
