The navy identified four of the dead as Albert Melvin Goyette motor machinist mate, first class son of E. T. Goyette of Aurora Kas.; James Edward Kepner ship's cook, third class, husband of Mrs. Carolyn Saffel Kepner, Elkins, W. V.; Willie Carlton Thompson, fireman second class fan of Willie Cliff Thompson of Coffee Springs, Ala., and Melvin Eugene Sherrard, seaman first class, son of Mrs. Bettie R. Almon, Dallas, Tex. The name of the fifth Man to die was withheld pending notification of the next of kin. Authorities said two other seamen in addition to the five whose condition is reported as serious were under treatment. Daily Press Sunday February 9, 1947 Page 14 5 Dead After Alcohol Orgy Norfolk Feb. 8, 1947 The grim aftermath of a party Thursday night aboard the navy attack transport Latimer at the naval shipyard, in which wood alcohol was the stimulant, by tonight had brought death to five navy enlisted men and serious illness to ten others. Still undisclosed, pending the report of a navy board of investigation, were the facts of the party and how the men were led into drinking the wood alcohol. The strictness with which the navy labels and handles wood alcohol containers is well known. Probably one of the victims was a visitor from the navy attack transport, Calvert, who went on leave after the party and died on leave at Davis Memorial Hospital, Elkins, W. VA. He was James Edward Kepner, ship’s cook, third class, husband of Mrs. Carolyn Saffel Kepner, of Elkins, Kepner was at the party and although the cause of his death was not known for certain here, it was considered probable that it was from wood alcohol poisoning. Other fatalities, all members of the Latimer’s crew, were announced as follows: Melvin Eugene Sherrard, seaman, first class; next of kin, his mother, Mrs. Betty R. Almond, 5407 Gregg St., Dallas, Texas. Albert Melvin Goyette, motor machinist’s mate, first class; next of kin, his father, E. T. Goyette, Aurora, Kans. Willie Carlton Thompson, fireman second class; next of kin, his father, Willie Cliff Thompson, Route 2, Coffee Springs, Ala. The fifth victim’s identification was not announced pending notification of next of kin.
