JAMES ALLEN'S DEATH LEAVES ONE VETERAN Long and Useful Life Comes to Close Here Friday Taps have sounded for James Allen, 90; Civil War veteran and G.A.A. member, who died at the home of his son, John Allen on East Second street Friday morning after an illness of several weeks. His death cuts the Civil War ranks in Logan to a lone survivor in the person of George Burk, West Main street. Early last week, the condition of Comrade Allen grew serious and it was apparent he was failing fast. That he realized final roll call was approaching was evidenced when he called American Legion representatives to his bedside to pass on to them the keys to the veterans room and to the record safes. For years no Memorial day was complete without the presence and guidance of Mr. Allen who personified all that is fine in the former service men of the nation. His erect carriage even in the face of four score years and ten marked him as a former soldier. Served Community Not alone as a soldier did he serve his nation and his community, for he ever was mindful of civic duties and he accepted his share of community service in the spirit of a good and useful citizen. Comrade Allen was born in a house in Hocking county near Oreville which stood partly in Hocking and partly in Perry county. For more than 90 years, he lived in the county of his birth. He rapidly was approaching his ninety-first birthday which would have fallen on May 5. For many years he lived on a Hocking Valley farm. Later he mined coal for many years at Haydenville and for a period of nine years he operated the Haydenville hotel. He came to Logan to make his home 35 years ago. His services as a soldier were performed as a member of the 58th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. At the close of the war he returned to his work and continued to serve his nation as a private citizen. When the Grand Army of the Republic was formed, he became a member and was enrolled throughout the long and honorable history of that organization in Hocking county. Last Post Member He was a member of the James K. Rochester post. He was the last member of that post and with his death, the charter will be returned to national headquarters. Arrangement for that service was made with a member of the American Legion last week. He was the last man in the Women's Relief Corps here. Memorial day last year, he took part in the parade, and in the ritualistic service of the organization and thus he paid his last tribute to the men with whom he served in the war. For many years he was managing director of the Oak Grove cemeteries. He was appointed to that post by the late Mayor James Smith. He served in that capacity until a change was made in the manner of administering the cemeteries. For years, he served as a member of the Hocking County Soldiers Relief organization, but a few years ago asked to be relieved of those duties that younger men might assume them. His life was marked by kindly service to family, neighbors, and community as a whole. Comrade Allen was a member of the Methodist church and regularly attended services when his health permitted. He was the head of a family of seven children, 24 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Allen died September 2, 1923. Members of his family are: Mrs. J.L. Hammon, Logan; Frank Allen, Haydenville; Mrs. T.E. McFaden, Columbus; Willis R. Allen, Columbus; John Allen, Logan; Mrs. Edward Myers, Logan; and Fred Allen, Columbus. The Rev. C.W. Graham preached the funeral sermon at the Methodist church at 2:30 p.m. Monday. Mrs. C.S. Clark and Mrs. R.B. Hansel sang two numbers with Miss Mary Louise Brown at the piano. Flowers were banked in profusion about the casket and required several cars to transport them to the cemetery. Pall bearers were Harold W. Larimer, C. Wood Brown, Melrowe Harbaugh, Frank W. Harden, B.A. Holl, and V.W. Martin. Burial was made in Oak Grove cemetery by the Woodard Funeral Service.
