Long was born June 11, 1845 in Henry County, Missouri and died November 17, 1915 at the Lutheran hospital at Beatrice, Neb., where he had gone to take treatment. He underwent an operation two days previous to his death and rallied from the ordeal and was apparently recovering, but a few hours before his death occurred, he began to sink rapidly. His age was 70 years, 5 months and 6 days. Mr. Long was married at the age of nineteen to Mellissa Taylor, to whom were born three sons. Nothing is known about these boys at the present time. He married again in 1870 Nancy McDonald of Indiana, who passed away in Douglas April 24, 1912. To this union were born four children, three of them surviving their parents, namely Rev. Charles S. Long of Aransas Pass, Texas, Mrs. May Deason of Cook, Neb and Edward C. Long of this village. An adopted son, Bert Long of near Douglas, also was a member of the family. Two sisters and one brother of the deceased are living, Mrs. Frank Wall of Selby, S. D. and Mrs. Mary Johnson and Robert Long of North Yakima, Wash. Mr. Long was a veteran of the civil war, having served his country honorably as a cavalryman in Company B, Eighth regiment of Missouri cavalry for three years, from 1862 to 1865. He served as commandant and chaplain of the local G.A.R. post when the organization was alive here. During the last few years when no active post has been maintained, owing to the diminished numbers of the soldiers, he has devotedly attended to arrangements for memorial services and helped to keep sacred the memory of the departed comrades. Mr. Long was a devoted and considerate father and husband and as a citizen in the community and one of Otoe county's early settlers he held the high esteem and respect of everyone. He came to Nebraska in 1876, living near Syracuse for six years, the family then removing to a farm three miles east of Douglas. Mr. Long took an active interest in politics and other affairs of home, state and nation. He was a true American first and last and one fact that bears witness to this is that he was an ardent baseball fan and has officiated as umpire in may heated contests of the national game on the local diamond. For his love of the play side as well as the more serious things of life, he was admired and loved by all kinds of people. The funeral services were held here Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Methodist church, and the body laid to rest in the family plot in Rose Hill cemetery. Rev. Robert Daugherty preached the funeral sermon. ~~~~ Nov 25, page 4, Mrs. Frank Wall of Selby, S. D. arrived here Friday and visited among friends until this week. She was called down here by the death of her brother, the late J. A. Long...all the former Douglas folks up there are getting along nicely.
