Description	:	The following was contributed by Anne Rupert: Twin of Francis Gabriel Fox. The Alexandria Gazette 12 Mar 1858 stated that Amos Fox took over the Marshall House Restaurant 3 Mar 1858. "One of the best hotels of which the city can boast, with the polite and gentlemanly superintendant Mr. Fox." Amos Fox and Jim Jackson were co-owners of the Marshall House Inn in Alexandria. "One of the best hotels of which the city can boast, with the polite and gentlemanly superintendant Mr. Fox." Amos Fox and Jim Jackson were co-owners of the Marshall House Inn in Alexandria. It was in the Marshall House that the first casualty of the Civil War occurred. Once Virginia voted to leave the Union, Jim Jackson ran a secessionist flag up over the hotel. When the Union troops arrived in Alexandria, the commander Col. Ellsworth entered the hotel and cut down the flag. Jackson shot Col. Ellsworth dead after this occurred. The Union troops then killed Jim Jackson. Death of Mr. Amos Fox Mr. Amos Fox died about 8 o'clock last Saturday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. F. M. Allder, near Pender. Mr. Fox had been in declining health for many months, and his death was not, therefore, entirely unexpected. He was about 78 years old, and is survived by one daughter (Mrs. Allder) and one brother, Dr. C. A. Fox, of Beltsville, MD. His funeral took place from the Episcopal church in this place on Monday, and his remains were interred in the Fairfax Cemetery, Rev. E. L. Goodwin officiating. The Masonic order, of which the deceased was a member, turned out in large force and rendered the usual Masonic honors. He was a genial, kind hearted gentleman, who easily made and retained friends. Mr. Fox was a clerk in the Marshall House, in Alexandria, in the spring of 1861, when Capt. James Jackson was killed after killing Col. Ellsworth, of the Federal army, who had just removed the Confederate flag from the building, and he was an eye witness of the exciting events immediately following that bloody and historic episode.
