He was the second child and the first son of the four children in his family. His sisters, Lillian Meistrell of Fremont and Estelle Freeman of Arlington, Tx., and a brother, Joe of Geneva, all survive. He attended Goldenrod School (District42) and graduated from Ohiowa High School in 1932. After several years of working in the Western and Northwest United States, he became a partner in a painting and home decorating business with a friend in Chicago., Ill. There he met and married Clara Bollettini on June 14, 1941. In January of 1943 he was drafted into the Army. He served in North Africa and was awarded four battle stars during the Italian campaign. He was discharged at the rank T-5 in September of 1945. He and his wife and two daughters moved to a farm three-fourths of a mile north of the one on which he was born, where they resided until 1968. In the mid-1960’s he purchased his Grandfather Schelbitzki’s homestead from his uncle, which remains in the family’s possession. He converted to Roman Catholicism in 1955 and remained a devout Catholic. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus of St. Joseph Parish Geneva and a life member of Ohiowa American Legion Post 193 and Samuel J. Marsh VFW Post 7102. James was married to Clara Bollettini of Chicago, Ill., on June 14, 1941, and to them three children were born. He is survived by his wife of the home, his daughters, Linda Pickle of Columbia, Mo. And carol Smith of San Carlos, Cal.; and one granddaughter, Joyce Ellen Pickle. His parents and his daughter, Joyce Ann, preceded him in death. Funeral services were conducted from St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Geneva on Monday, April 11, with Father Banach officiating. Pallbearers were Harold Engle, and Jerry Engle; two VFW members, Willard Mussman and Charles Miller, and two Ohiowa Legion members, Keith Ozenbaugh and Louis Schropfer. Interment was in the Geneva Public Cemetery. The Nebraska Signal April 1988.
