He had been sick for the past two months and his demise was not unexpected. The funeral was held on Friday at his late home, and interment was in Rose Hill cemetery. A long line of carriages followed his remains to the cemetery, quite a number joining here owing to the very bad condition of the roads. James B. Barnes was born in Medina Co., Ohio, Dec. 29, 1840. When nine years old his parents moved to Sauk Co., Wis. Here he learned to use the axe in helping his father clear up a farm. During this time he improved his time at the township school in acquiring an education. In 1858 he began teaching and continued till the war broke out when he attempted to enlist with the 100 day men but was rejected on account of his age. However, in the fall of 1862 he was successful, going in with Co. D., 38th Wis. Infantry, with which he served till the close of the war. He was chosen corporal in 1864, and later was promoted to 1st sergeant. Returning home he took up the work of a civilian where he left off by again teaching school. In the fall of 1865, Nov. 8th, he was married to Alice J. Randall at Reedsburg, Wis. The next year he bought a farm which he operated for three years, engaging mainly in hop raising. The west began to appeal to him so in 1872 he moved to Guthrie Co., Iowa. Here he combined teaching with farming till he decided to go west for sure, so suiting the action to the thought, he moved to Nebraska in the spring of 1872 and settled on the old homestead where he continued to reside till the day of his death, March 15, 1905. He was one of those hardy pioneers that prepare the way for civilization. He knew no such word as fail, but pursued his way steadfastly with success always in view. The first year he was sorely afflicted with rheumatism, then there were short crops and grasshoppers, but through it all he stayed and triumphed over all. He was foremost in every move for the building up and improvement of his neighborhood and the county. He was always willing to bear his full portion of the burdens. The Governor appointed him the first Justice of the Peace in that part of the country. He held court in the old sod school house. He helped in organizing the school district and precinct. He bore the thankless burdens of these petty offices well, knowing that someone must do these things if we are to enjoy the benefits. In 1878 his worth was recognized by the citizens of the county and he was elected to the office of Commissioner and served the county two terms. During Governor Poynter’s administration the state had the benefit of his services while he served as Steward of the Hospital for the Insane at Hastings. In this service he was a credit to himself, the county he represented and the state. In all his public work he gave full service and left the people under a debt of gratitude for such faithful service. In the great Alliance movement which swept the county and the state he was a prime mover. In the Populist party, which grew out of the Alliance, he was one of the “wheel horses”. At the last state convention he received the nomination for State Treasurer but declined on account of his poor health. As a citizen, neighbor and friend he will be greatly missed. His faithful wife died in Aug., 1879 leaving him to bear his burdens alone. Four children were born to them and all are living. W. G. is located at Geneseo, Ill., and is U. S. Ass’t. Engineer on the construction of the Illinois and Mississippi canal. Fred and Bert are both prominent farmers and stock raisers here and favorably known. Lillie resides at Beatrice. Beside these he has a sister, Mrs. Flora Martin, at Los Gatos, Calif; a brother, Mortimer H., at Thorton, Nev.; and John D., at Indianapolis, Ind. In providing for his family he joined the Woodmen and was a member of Albion Camp No. 551 at the time of his death. He also was a member of the Masonic lodge here. A large concourse of friends attended his funeral at his old homestead. Services were conducted by D. J. Poynter assisted by Rev. E. T. George. Then the procession followed the remains to Rose Hill cemetery at Albion where the body was consigned to its last resting place.
