The funeral service was largely attended as Mr. Barnes was held in high esteem by the people of his old home community and by all who knew him. M. G. Barnes was born at Reedsburg, Sauk county, Wisconsin, January 17, 1867, son of James Brewster Barnes and Alice Jane Barnes. He moved to Dale City, Iowa in 1870 and to Nebraska May 10th, 1872, his parents locating on a homestead. He received his early schooling in a sod school house in District 3, of Boone county, and later taught for three years in the schools of the county. He spent one year in a college at Holton, Kan., and studied for a short term at the Nebraska University. He later entered the University of Michigan where he finished a course in civil engineering. He was married to Mary Wilhelmina Wood of Michigan on August 17, 1898. The children born to this union were Alice Elizabeth, Flora Lillian and James M. After completing his engineering course the first project he worked upon was the Sault St. Marie canal. He was in charge of parties surveying and estimating the proposed Birmingham-Warrior River Canal in 1897; was engaged on the U. S. Deep Waterway from the Great Lakes to the Sea by way of New York City, 1898; employed on design and construction of Hennepin Canal, connecting Illinois and Mississippi rivers, 1899 to 1905; was U. S. assistant engineer in charge of design of Moline Locks, Rock Island, Illinois, 1905-06; designer of locks for Panama canal, 1905-1907; served as member of the board of construction engineers at Albany; was appointed by Governor Lowden to devise means for utilizing the waters of the Illinois river for power and navigation, 1917; and since that year was chief engineer on Illinois Waterways. Mr. Barnes was a member of the Christian (Disciples) church. He was an upright citizen and was at all times interested in those things which ended toward a better country. The first earnings that his efforts brought in were invested in Boone county land and always he maintained a deep interest in this county where he grew to manhood and in the people of his old home neighborhood. He retained his Boone county holdings and all thru his busy engineering career was interested in the raising of livestock. His son, James, who completed the agricultural course at the University of Nebraska, has been in charge of his real estate interest here the past few years.
