Read More	Iowa City Press-Citizen (Iowa City, IA) Friday, 15 FEB 1946 Page 2, Column 5 "93-YEAR-OLD PIONEER DIES James Barlow Crail, Washington Dry Goods Man, To Be Buried WASHINGTON, Iowa -- James Barlow Crail, 93, pioneer Washington dry goods merchant, died at his home at 10:30 o'clock Thursday night. Mr. Crail retired in 1925 after 42 years in business. He was born in 1853 at Cumberland, W. Va., the son of Benjamin F. Crail and Anna McCaskey Crail. At he age of four he came with his parents up the Mississippi river to Burlington. The family rode on horseback along the old trail to Fairfield, with four-year-old James in his mother's arms. In 1885, Mr. Crail was married at Fairfield to Harriet Tomy, who died in 1888. He was married again in 1901 to Julia W. Smiley, who died July 10, 1927. At Fairfield Mr. Crail was employed at a brickyard and dry goods store. After coming to Washington in 1888, he opened a dry goods store on the south side of the square. The establishment was known as the Roth and Crail store. Later Mr. Crail acquired exclusive ownership of the store and operated it until 1923, when he sold out to H.H. Ward Co. He was active in the Knights of Pythias lodge, and several years ago received the 50 year pin. He is survived by two sons, Hubert and Rodney; a brother, Dave; and a sister, Mrs. Sue Steele. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon at Jones funeral home. The burial place has not yet been announced."
