Crail: The Fairfield Ledger (Fairfield, Jefferson Co., Iowa), 23 February 1865, p.3, col.1; State Historical Society of Iowa, Des Moines, Iowa. TERRIBLE ACCIDENT On Thursday afternoon last, Philander Crail, aged 13 years, met his death in a horrible manner. He had ridden about a mile and a half into the country to execute an errand. On his return, when several hundred yards from the house, he was thrown from the horse, his foot remaining in the stirrup strap., He endeavored to get up, but could not. The horse started to town, dragging Phily with him. A number of persons endeavored to stop the horse, but did not succeed. He was carried into town and when some person endeavored to get ahead of the horse, he gave a sudden movement, when Phily's foot was pulled from his boot, and he was left in the street. His body was carried into the house of A.J. Gudgell, and friends proceeded to wash him. His clothes were nearly all off him. He had been kicked several times by the horse, and was terribly cut and bruised . . . . It is supposed that life had become extinct before he was carried one hundred yards . . . . His remains were taken to his afflicted mother, (his father being in the army) who lay upon a bed of sickness. Her deep grief and the deep gloom which the accident cast upon the community we shall not attempt to describe . . . . On Friday his remains were taken to the M.E. church . . . . His remains were escorted to their last resting place by a very large concourse of citizens. The children of the various schools were present to the number of several hundred . . . . The following additional has been provided to us by the Superintendent of the public schools. Phily Crail was 12 years and 10 months old.
